Bloc Party - wtf?

their drummer is one of the last people i nearly smacked. not for any great transgression actually, just cos he's a fucking prick and i was in a bad mood and suddenly got a real urge to take the mobile phone he was spraffing self-obsessed crap in his obnoxious sloaney voice and smash it into his face again and again and again.

oh, block party are shit n'all by the way.

the second album was poor but all the haters should give the new one a go. Paul Epworth is a very good producer and there is some interesting ideas on the album. They are still quite young and at least they are trying (yeah i know ...very trying ) out new things.

The keywords here are "ideas" and "trying". They're too inexperienced and lacking on talent to do anything as edgy as they wanted to make. Like I've said earlier, most of the times they sound like bands formed by 12 year olds after they've listened to their first "proper" record.

I liked the Silent Alarm album, but what's happened since has been a bit dismaying. :(

Will watch the 'extended Jools' later, and no doubt be very disappointed.

yeah i liked silent alarm as well, rumors abound on how they went to shit though. :(

Yeah thats my point - I like to see people try and do something new even if it doesnt always work. I like to see bands....artists whatever develop. Ok a band like Oasis might have written much better songs but there is no development, no change. Mistakes are good sometimes.

the new album is actually pretty good, some of the lyrics are a bit too literal and earnest for my tastes, though it never approaches Billy Bragg levels.

The dancey songs are actually the best on the album, though i'm not sure about that Sirens, seems much to close to the Chemical Brother's Setting Sun even if it is meant as a nostaligic reference to late 90's dance. Talons is good, the jazzy bits on Mercury in Rising are brilliant and Your Visits are Getting Shorter is cool.

I liked there second album too, yeah it was hit and miss but I like what they seem to be aiming for, with the whole soundtrack thing, oh and i'd go gay for Kelee.

This is extremely wise.

Yeh, but sometimes artists are pretty good at what they do. They dont need to be pushing the boundries all the time.

From an interview with Jeffrey Lewis:

I think it’s really about career longevity, I can’t say there’s a current artist who I’m as impressed with in terms of creative flexibility, ‘cause it really takes thirty years to see how creatively flexible someone could be. And then again there are people who are just great because they do the same thing. I mean, I love The Mountain Goats, and John Darnielle’s a pretty consistent songwriter – if you like some of his stuff, you’ll probably like the other stuff, and that’s a great thing. In one of the Jonathan Richman albums from the ‘90s the liner notes are really funny; it’s actually a really interesting counterpoint to the Lou Reed thing. Jonathan said: “Once in a while an artist puts out an album that is so different from the rest of his output it requires some explanation on the part of the artist. This is not one of those albums, it’s pretty much the same kind of thing I’ve been doing for the last fifteen years; if you like those, you’ll probably like this one, I hope you continue to like what I do”

And that is equally as wise, IMO.

Fair point. All that I (and Debord) are saying is that in a genre such as indie rock, where it's easy for bands just to pick up a couple of telecasters, a Fender precision and a small drumkit, get a floppy haircut, shag a Geldof girl and get and stay famous without trying anything new, we should be applauding an attempt to try something a bit different musically. Like them or hate them (and I'm quite staggered by the amount of loathing on this thread) that's what Bloc Party have done on "Intimacy".

Having liked all their stuff so far, and found the decent when i saw em live...

is it safe to assume i'll also like the new album?

Its funny how it stings when people slag off bands you like ,I'm not talking about Bloc Party specifically. I have an affection for them but at 28 maybe I shouldnt. No , in general ,threads about whether a band is good or not are demeaned by comments like "Block Party = complete rubbish ". I'm still wary of Mogwai because of their Blur : are shite tshirts.I hate that sudden , thoughtless dismissal of someones taste. Im not gonna start being nice to Snow Patrol fans but I like the idea of swiftly analysing why i dont like them and if requested ,sharing it politely.
