Bleakest Film You've Ever Seen?

one to be missed

Maybe it's just me but I remember seeing "Kes" for the first time and being completely morose for days. Anyone share this view??

Lilya 4 Ever, definitely - not one to watch in a triple-bill with Naked and Nil By Mouth if you're on a comedown!

Lilya 4 Ever is a really good film, but certainly a bleak one.

But what a threesome Yossa, three fantastic films :D

slightly off topic, but if you are coming down, i always find The Taking of Pelham 123 helps.

I used to think it was '1984' (the John Hurt and Richard Burton version).

Then I saw 'Threads'.

Makes me shudder just thinking about it.

They showed us threads in high school..horrific film for a 14 year old to watch. really affected me at the time. :(

I would agree with many of the above.... Lilya 4ever was tough going... but the one that sticks in my mind even though it was over 12 years ago that I saw it in the cinema is Ken Loach's Ladybird Ladybird... I saw it on a very sunny summer's day in Valencia and came out feeling utterly utterly hopeless... :(

Gotta be The Machinist for me.

Usually for me with most films that are bleak, you come out the other end thinking that life isn't quite as bad as it could be.....I've never felt so low after watching a movie as I did with this 'un.

How to make an american quilt with Julia Roberts

sheesh ex wife took me kicking and screaming, god the pain of watching it still haunts me !

Once Were Warriors, set in Auckland was very bleak & depressing. Alcoholism, child abuse, domestic violence, peadophilla, suicide it had the lot. :(

Amazing film, and yes very dark.

What about that Polish film, directed by Kristof Kieslowski (sp?) which I think was called "A short film about killing"? That was really dark.

Can't believe it took till page 4 for this to come up. Wins hands down if you ask me - unflinchingly, unrelentingly bleak.

Can I also throw in Rita Sue and Bob Too for entirely different reasons - the pullovers, the Black Lace gig, the haircuts.....Christ, the 80s were bad.

Word. I'm embarrassed to admit I was born in the eighties - my grandkids will disown me when they see that shit :(

You're all right pal. I'm old enough to fucking remember it.
