Bleak House

Why does <forgotten his name> keep asking his granddaughter to 'shake him up'? (and isn't he grotesque? )
Because he gets tossed about in his porter’s chair:
…but the necessary exertion recoils on Mr. Smallweed himself, whom it throws back into his porter's chair like a broken puppet. The excellent old gentleman being at these times a mere clothes-bag with a black skull-cap on the top of it, does not present a very animated appearance until he has undergone the two operations at the hands of his granddaughter of being shaken up like a great bottle and poked and punched like a great bolster…

I’ve enjoyed this telly series, but recommend reading the book.

It's his best (though I haven't read all of them) - has one of the best opening paragraphs in literature, esp this bit:
"As much mud in the streets, as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn Hill"

I think I liked Barnaby Rudge better------- not read it for years though & never seen an adaptation of it-------- is there one ?

I dunno - that's one I haven't read - I'm rationing my Dickens over years so I never run of his books to read

Talking Dickens, did anyone see the Miriam Margoyle's "Dickens To America" where she is following in his footsteps. Another excellent BBC offering. Pt two tonight.

Saw it a few months ago on BBC4 - fantastic series - Miriam Margoleses' enthusiasm for Dickens shines through and is very infectious. Think I will watch the repeat!

The first time I watched it I ended up wondering why don't see more of Miriam on TV, she is a brilliant actress (and definitely well suited to Dickens' adaptations IMO).

So who did it? Was it Lady Deadlock, The captain, the mad French maid or someone else?

Another good episode. Gillian Anderson just gets better and better, I really felt her pain this week.

I think she's absolutely fab in this. I can't wait for this week's episode. It's like Agatha Christie -- there are so many people who hate the evil Mr Tolkinghorn, it could be anyone!

I can't work out who Esther is going to marry either. I really like Mr Jarndyce/Dennis Lawson and agree with sparkling -- he's definitely got a bit of a saucy twinkle in his eye. ;)

I know who did it but I'm still in suspense - I'll be gutten when it's over

I set it up to record on Friday and only found out last night that the stupid sky plus hadn't recorded it afterall...too late for Sunday's repeat...so please anyone tell me whats happened?

/brings back thread from the dead

I'm utterly loving this adaptation - the acting is superb, the make-up incredible. My only minor niggle is alot of the swooshy camera effects which might be very trendy in <insert CSI-stylee police thingy here> but I don't really think they have much of a place in Dickenzian London.

If Bleak House doesn't clean up at the BAFTA's then there is no justice.

Agree with most of this. Not sure what you mean by 'swooshy camera effects' but I quite like the way it has been filmed. While I'm not really a Dickens fan I think I can see from this adaptation why people like him. Indeed, if I wasn't so averse to reading I might even have been tempted to pick up a couple of his books :o

This is being repeated tonight, (and on NYE  ) on BBC4 for people who missed it the first time.

And thank god for that :)
