Yer man's a socialist and got elected there, thats all that's important ...

In more varied ;) areas**,. maybe the Greens might have a shout ...

**ie Brighton :o

... or elsewhere, vaguely dissident Labour MPs will feel more pressurised to check their left flank a bit more carefully ...

I saw he'd won on the news this morning, but BBC news website is rather coy about what his politics actually are...

He is an old school left winger in a world where left and right are fast becoming meaningless. I'm glad this shock has happened, but don't pretend this guy has any relevance beyond a small aera of the Welsh valleys (indeed he stands for a bygone era even there)

Right but don't tie him to 'family faith and flag' Toryism, utterly ignorant of you in my opinion. I feel he may be relevant to the Welsh valleys (not a small area as you suggest, a great bulk of the population of Wales lives there) and possibly to the English coal areas too.

The opposition to New Labour in Wales comes from the left not the right, which is something alot of commentators can't grasp.

I love the way the Tories failed miserably again (800 odd votes ?!) despite sending in their new trendy leader. I hope he came by car and paid the Severen bridge toll.

That was my point, this isn't something that could be 'exported' to elsewhere in the UK, just as the Galloway result was something caused by factors very local to that part of East London.

That's a good point actually.

I believe the left alternative to Labour should not have an international UK blueprint that can be exported across the country, but should be based around local factors. That's the only way we can break Labour down, with local rebellions to them, rather than a UK-wide new organisation.
