Blade Runner and Withnail and I: why do people bang on about these pissing films?

is it like a disease people get and it makes them think these 2 films are the most important amazing events of all time. like bigger than the ice age or god being born.

will there ever be a time when people shut up about these v average films?

Withnail and I is a bit crap really, never liked it...BR is great, but given I'm a bit of a sci fi fan I guess I would say that...

i think it's a far better film for leaving the ending to your imagination though

the scene of REG doing the prince in the rain is one of my very favourite in cinema

BRs not bad either, bit soporific at times though

I love both films. People go on about them because they are great.

The thing I have never been sure of is whether Withnail is in fact in love with the other fellow. I'm sure seasoned Withnail watchers will think such an observation old hat.

yes :( i always imagine that that still happens, he leaves the zoo and goes off to do it....

I always assumed he found another drinking chum (Darragh O Malley? :) ) and drank himself to death.

What was the original ending then?

I always saw it as Withnail being madly in love with Marwood, and his self-destructive nature being him turned on himself for not coming to terms with his sexuality.

thanks for starting this thread in order to give people an opportunity to air their ideas to each other via their internet connection

I dislike Withnail And I but only because all the characters are so dislikeable as to make it hard to sit through them. But the script is marvellous and the ending likewise.

Blade Runner is as visually memorable as any other film I can think of.

Yeah that's the one.

Don't get it personally. Blade Runner is pretty good the first time you watch it, Withnail has some funny moments and lines. Both have their boring patches.

And that's it.

i agree with fruitloop.

and that's it.

i haven't seen bladerunner, and have no interest in doing so. that makes me cool

withnail and i , however, i will happily watch till the cows come home. particularly the scene in the cafe, and the bedroom benny hill style chase around the bed. and that makes me cool

;)

I've never seen Blade Runner so can't comment on it, but Withnail and I is cleverly scripted & superbly acted, with impeccable comic timing.

I think the reason it's become a classic is because so many people identify with the stoner, shared-flat, impoverished lifestyle, and the poignancy of good times having to come to an end.

Everytime I play poker - I recall the immortal line "Queens to bet...." - great film.

Blade runner superb too. Whats not to like.

Remember the lesson of The Smiths
Just because a bunch of wankers like it, doesn't mean that it's shit
And remember the lesson of Take That
If a pile of pillocks pretend to like it, doesn't mean it's crap

They are not the most important amazing events of all time.

Wise words. Ah, the number of timers I've agonised over that.. :(

Two very different films.

Love Withnail. Fantastic script. Understated, dry and kind of quaint. Very funny but sad too.

Not fussed on Bladerunner.

If you get pissed off about people banging on about them retaliate by telling them how good you think all the Die hard, Arnie and Bourne films are.

as much as i love withnail, it does grate a little when people start quoting it over and over.

Have to admit did chuckle the other day hearing a Withnail & I quote.

I was waiting for the last train home after a beer festival on a very small station platform with hundreds of other fellow pissed-up revellers. Once the train started to approach, one of the hapless guards attempted to inform everyone to 'get behind the line' in a very loud and stern voice. This prompted one joker to scream: 'GET IN THE BACK OF THE VAN!!' in near pitch-perfect replication of the actual actors voice.

Maybe it was the real ale kicking in, but couldn't help laughing all the way home at this. :D

Just made Mrs. S☼I sit down and watch Withnail after almost 4 years of trying. She didn't like it very much. "It's a boy's film", she said.

But I still love it.

No beauty without decay.

It's shit.
