Blackberry Storm comes with killer onscreen keyboard

If girls like it, that is definite proof that it is uncool.

I'm guessing that's toungue in cheek..seriously though, check out then new BB handsets - definitely a good consumer phone now rather than pushing emails.

Especially as the push email is effectively useless if you're on an exchange server without an BES. Fuck off am I forwarding to pop mail.

You can set most decent smartphones to check for new email at timed intervals so unless you desperately need to know about mail the second it arrives, who needs push anyway?

Not with Blackberry you can't - not via Exchange.

And you're right, it's not so much the push I need, more the Exchange activesync compliance. My N95 is set to sync every 15 minutes during peak times, it's not push.

Yep...my train to work seems to be your average consumer types and students using pink, green and red blackberry Pearls rather than fat middle aged men with a navy blue brick!

Yep, I've seen quite a few teenagers with Pearls too. And yeah the obligatory pink one's being used by girls (always seems to be Asian girls for some reason  ) too...

Just saw the first tv ad for the storm, so now we have three of the top four networks with a flagship touch screen smartphone (BB Storm on Vodafone, iPhone on O2 and G1 'Android phone' on T Mobile)...makes me wonder what Orange is going to big up?

Maybe the HTC route as well to try and undercut T Mobile?

An early review is positively over flowing with praise:
Verdict

Has Research In Motion cracked the touchscreen? It seems they have. While the iPhone still offers plenty to the consumer, the lack of a number of key features such as MMS, video, Flash support in web browsing, a 2-megapixel camera, no Bluetooth data, no camera flash, no desktop pairing so you can use it as a modem and no cut and paste function has left Apple suddenly finding themselves trailing behind.

The BlackBerry Storm does all the above (bar Wi-Fi) and in our mind has the best email system on offer in a mobile device today.

It's not all perfect though. The lack of Wi-Fi will grate with some, while others will want a better camera, and then there is the battery. Like other powerful handsets on the market this is likely to be a charge every day affair.

As a BlackBerry Curve user for the last 2 years, when we played with the Bold here at Pocket-lint earlier in the year we thought we had found our next phone. Luckily a tip off told us to wait for the Storm. The wait might be have a while coming, but this is good enough for it to be my next phone.

High praise indeed.

If only it had chuffing wi-fi....

i will mention it to the product team at VF

got introduced to this the other day and it is indeed very nice

i am not keen on onscreen keyboards though.

but if you dont care it is very nice indeed

I just had a play on it. The interface is nowhere near as good as the iPhone, but the clickable touch screen destroys the opposition. It's really clever and feels like you're hitting actual keys. Nice.

The speakerphone is incredibly loud and movie playback very smooth indeed but the lack of Wi-Fi and horrid interface means it's not for me.

I am with VFs product development team on the 26th if you fancy doing a short review. i will pass it onto them

you wouldnt believe the data these things generate btw.

It's amazing, a phone hasn't yet been released that ticks all the boxes: we have everything, but no wi-fi / we have everything, but no 3.5mm jack / we have everything, but no decent camera / we have everything, but but no proper keyboard.

The closest to perfect, for me, is still the Nokia N-series. Not sexy, but it does everything. This is pretty ludicrous 18 months after the launch on the N95.

Saw the N96 last night up close, big improvement on looks, very nice phone.

Yeah, but the battery is still awful and the lack of digital tv makes it weaker compared to it's standing in Europe.

If I was to upgrade now, I'd go for the Samsung version of the N95/6. Which is annoying as really I'd want something sexy.

But then they ruin it with a hopeless, piddly battery and low res screen. And no QWERTY of course.

I can live with the no qwerty. I'm faster without it. My old boss has a qwerty Samsung number and in juvenile text races I always won. Longer text entry is a different story, I've no doubt, but I rarely need to write much on my phone.

Well the Centro battery isn't anything to brag about so that's if I can live with that...you're right about qwerty though. That's the reason I gave up on my N73, lack of qwerty just pissed me right off!

a mate has just got one. nice phone. screen is better than the iphone. its not multi-touch, so it takes getting used to clicking the screen, but its very easy to text and write emails. has auto-correct so you can type fairly fast.

havent tried the browser as his data service isnt on. handy that it has all the apps you need right out of the box thats handy. ui is smooth, though underneath its still the blackberry text based ui.

conclusions. nice phone, like a corporate iphone should be.
