Blackberry handsets and Urban

ah didn't see that you'd added another link. most of that goes over my head too. can't you just explain it simply?
"It provides moderate speed data transfer, by using unused TDMA channels in the GSM network." - then i reiterate my previous question - so it's like the phone system but not? why can't they just integrate the 2?
I'm no expert but from what I can tell it is part of a normal phone system. No idea why it can't work with 2g. Think it's something to do with the way the data is sent to and from your phone.

so blackberries can receive calls as well as data?
sorry, i find this a bit baffling. i was under the impression it worked on something like wifi where you had to have special transmitters around for it to work, but i have no idea why i thought that :o

LOL! And I get called a nerd!? :D Remember though that it changes that for your login so when you're on your pc it will still have the look...

i think i see ... rather mind boggling, all this technology!
so if there was an area with bad mobile reception does that mean you'd have bad reception on a blackberry as well? (it's fecking awful in our house, never used to be - dunno what's changed ... )

You can also buy software that enables you to create and amend attachments. But I prefer the trashpony approach tbh.

I haven't checked that on mine (mobile v GPRS reception). It's quite rare that I find bad reception on the vodafone nework though. But yes, if you're in the tube for example you can't receive emails etc until you get the GPRS signal back.

see, i like the idea of being able to post on the boards when i'm out and about ... could be dangerous tho! :D

blackberrys are for email. what you want is a symbian phone for web browsing. not that urban is designed to work on small handsets.

urban is rubbish on small hand sets :(

Yes!! Great for train journeys! But (as KE points out above) very expensive. I've fallen foul of that myself.

if i got one i'd definitely take it out with me to show off - they're fancy-looking little buggers

come on then, what's the running cost like?

kea said:
ah good point, how much does it cost?! it'd be worth it to impress yer mates tho i reckon :D

LOL! If you have the cash then yeah! Not sure, as I say I haven't really looked into them properly till now. Different networks have different data tarriffs (they charge seperate from phone/texting). I think T Mobile and O2 have the best data tarriffs at the mo (again don't quote me on it haven't looked in a bit).

Work are offering me a Blackberry. All I know about them is that you can pick up your emails and use it as a phone. Is it possible to surf Urban on these things as well or is there a better gizmo that would allow me to keep in touch whilst on the move?
It's always going to be a bit of a painful experience trying to enjoy the might and majesty of urban75 on a teensy weensy screen, but it's usable on my imate JAM smartphone.

Unless someone's paying for your data charges, it can also get well expensive to surf, unless you've got a wi-fi enabled device and a free connection.

I've got a bill in front of me here, from June. There's a WAP entry for 1.347KB which cost 0.003 pence. Someone might be able to do the sums for an average posting session

Not sure, keep in mind these things are designed for busines/executives (and trust me you'll look like one with fiddling with one, another reason I aint that into them!) so frequent use isn't going to be cheap.

hmm well t-mobile says £12.50 line rental monthly, free handset. that's good innit?

Yeah just been looking T Mobile have some good tarriffs it seems. Is that for a Blackberry phone?

I get something like 6 meg data allowance for £5/month off T-Mobile which isn't bad for a bit of board surfing/email on the move. They've also got this web'n'walk deal that could be worth a look.

are you talking something like a wifi-enabled laptop? how does that work then - why have a blackberry to read your emails on if you have to use a laptop to link up to the net with? you might as well just use the laptop!
(or am i getting it wrong?)

You are! My phone is wi-fi enabled - so when I was in NY I was able to send off emails/read the boards etc for nowt.

If I couldn't find a freebie wi-fi signal I'd have to use the expensive GPRS to connect.

(edit to answer your question: Bluetooth is a short range radio technology. Blackberry is a phone (system) designed for reading email on the move)

I'm with vodafone (obviously, dur @ me!) My monthly running charge is higher because you pay about £7 a month for having the Blackberry connection. But when I upgraded I got voda to analyse my recent phone bills and come up with a package that suits my usage. I'm on Blackberry Anytime 100 with 3pounds half price extras pack (50 texts or 16 pictures or 10 video messages) plus itemised billing which comes to £35.31 pm + VAT. Then there's usage on top. As long as I don't surf the net I'm paying about the same now as I was pre-Blackberry but get my emails too.

 so you've got wifi AND gprs on your phone? and the wifi is cheap to use, so you use that whenever you can, but you've got the gprs as well for when it's needed?

ah ok. so blackberry has nothing to do with bluetooth?

Yes. So if I want to surf the web and send email when I'm out and about, I'll find a free Wi-Fi spot (like Foyles cafe in central London) and connect for absolutely nothing. I can even make free phone calls to the US using Skype! If there's no Wi-Fi about I'll connect via GPRS (and pay charges).

Blackberry phones may have bluetooth built in as it's a handy way to transfer data between your handset and your PC/other phones.

You can connect to the web using Bluetooth but only if you're close to a 'paired' device (laptop, bluetooth enabled router etc).

Most phones connect to the web using GPRS.
