Biting cat

Brian is a biter too. I had a campaign of sternly evicting him from my lap when he did it and I can see him thinking about it a bit more before he does it, but it hasn't really made a massive difference. It's just his way of saying "feed me". And most of the time it's not that hard.

I have had times of thinking "this is really not working out", but he has a lovable side too so I've learned to put up with it.

Our last cat was very sociable and insisted on being the centre of attention at all times, was a total chatterbox but was a biter, despite our trying everything since she was a kitten. Tips people suggested included sticking a finger down her throat so she gagged, or keeping fingers coated with mustard or chilli as a deterrent. Nothing worked, she was a biter until the day she died.

Our current cats don't bite. Some bite, some don't.

Our cat used to go for you quite a bit when we got him many many years ago, people who he had lived with before had a small girl who who use him as a toy and was his way of saying he didn't want to play.

We had almost 20 years and although he never totally stopped, the longer we had him, the less and less he would do it, it was almost unheard of when he died. I did use to give him a sharp tap on the head and put him out the cold if he did it though.

He is not getting any better. he bites you if you stop stroking him, if you don't feed him on demand, if you gave him dry food, if many people are round my house, if the day has a vowel in it, you get the picture.

He bit my gf the other day, proper bite too and spat at her, she had ceased to stroke him in the required manner I think.

I am very concerned that he will bite one of my kids. If he does it's curtains for him and a new Davy Crocket style hat for me.

my cat is the opposite, he TOO peaceful, sits around all day purring being sociable. count yourself lucky mate..

sounds like your cat's playing the alpha male card, he thinks he's in charge of you. So you might need to react (rather than ignore) to get him to stop. The picking him up by the scruff of the neck each time he does it might help. As might wacking him firmly (but not hard) with a rolled up newspaper. You'll need to react immediately and consistently for it to work. For our old cat we used to clap hands and shout "NO!" loudly - he'd jump and back off. Worked after a longish while.

Also, you know when he sits and looks at you? Make eye contact and keep it until he looks away. It's one of the ways cats establish their superiority. So if he's staring at you and you look away first it's essentially a signal that he's the boss of you. This is why cats often make a beeline for people who are afraid/allergic to them. These people break eye contact first so the cat thinks "aha, you're inferior to me, therefore I can sit on you".

One of mine was like that as a kitten - I just chucked her firmly on the floor and ignored her (and not chucked as in launched into space or anything:D ) She stopped quite quickly... within a month or so at least.

On another note - not cos it sounds like yours is because of this, but one of mine started chewing peoples hands whilst being stroked - that turned out to be gingivitis - got it treated and she stopped...

I have gone down the limited violence route. He gets a whack or a barefoot kick if he attacks and gets shouted at. This might seem harsh but tis better than abandonment or death at the vets, or indeed being made into a hat.

Dear god, no :(

It seems to be working. A bit that is. Only got bit twice last night and chased the bastard all over the house untill he legged it out of the cat flap. He looked a bit chastened when he returned and did not bite me this morning. :)

Well nearly a year later and bobby is twice the size he was and still loves to bite. Not as much as before but he is still a nippy fucker. Leaves the kids be which is good.

What's weird is that if I insult him verbally even whilst smiling he swipes at me.

I bet you will ya dirty bastard... you seem to have him well trained to spread 'em & give you a show already :D

He did that already whe i got him! I know it looks like he is after a gam but it's nothing to do with me. :D

My tom has a habit, when he wants either some serious affection or feeding, of biting my toe.

His preferred toe is the big on my left foot, which has no toenail. It feels extremely wrong.

Advice above is good - if the cat's biting to prove its dominance it needs reminding who's boss.

What i did in the end was stop feeding him if he bit me. He is a cutie though. For a ginger that is.

Fuck that, get rid.
You'd have to be a fucking mug to shell out hard earned keeping an animal that attacks you. I mean, why would you

I read that they can bite if they weren't properly socialised as a kitten, or had bad experiences with people in the past. He's a gorgeous looking cat. I hope he realises he is on to a good thing now & continues to improve.

He is very cute, and really does bite less than he used to. I can get through a whole week without being nipped these days and when he bites it not hard anymore, no need for the iodine.:D

He was a rescue cat and had a hard life as a kitten followed by six months in battersea dog and cats home. He is friendly and sits on laps and purrs a lot.

My cat has recently started biting. It's nipping really, rather than proper bites, but still annoying. She jumps on my bed in the morning and bites my toes/hands, even my head!

hey, you know how police dog handler's have to chugg their alsatian's pink lipsticks' ? well, i think that's the solution to your cat's aggression. you have to give him a shuffle - and it looks to me from that photo he's gaggin' for it already :D
