'Bing' - Microsoft's new search engine

Interesting snippet:
It's still miles behind Google, of course, but as opening months go it's none too shabby

microsoft-bing-search-engine.jpgFigures released show that Microsoft's 'knowledge engine', Bing, got more unique visitors than Twitter, Digg and CNN in June. It also scored more visitors than Embroidery Online, Taxidermy.net and Non-League Daily but I suppose that's not as significant.

The site was visited by nearly 50 million users - 49,571,922 to be precise. Twitter got 22,997,148 visitors in the same period, CNN got 28,645,202 and Digg got 38,961,981.

Microsoft reportedly spent £61million on the launch of Bing. So it's money well spent then? Well, maybe, but Bing isn't really designed to rival Twitter, Digg or CNN is it? It's meant to rival Google. Google got 145,948,025 unique users in June, so it's still got a way to go then.

It's even still trailing Microsoft's other search engine, Live, which got 79,405,701 visitors. This was a 21% drop from May though, indicating that users are ditching Live in favour of Bing.

Are you guys using Bing? If so, what do you think? I've only really had a quick look - I quite liked the video searching with playback available via the thumbnails. Although I'm told you could do this with Live anyway.

I've never used it. Has anyone here?

when i lived in Wales, "Bing" was a term used for a mate

"alright bing?" as in "alright mate?"

Whatever you think of Bing as a search engine, the homepage today is the cutest thing ever! Sleepy sea lions!

used bing this morning to try and find out what was going wrong with an oracle10g install on powerPC. had to give up and use google after ten mins.

I use a search engine called Privatelee. It is my replacement for Scroogle that has died - or killed by Google. It was a Google scraper, that picked the data from Google but without retaining details of the user. It is available as an add on for the Firefox search engine menu.

Privatelee is also a scraper, but it accesses both Google and Bing without adverts or keeping your data just like Scroogle. That means that I must be a Bing user, but I don't know how much of each search engine is used. I also have Bing in my menu and use it when I don't get satisfaction from Google, which is rare.

Thanks pinkychukkles for the heads up about Blekko. I have now added it to my firefox search menu. Something else for me to learn about - slashtags.

Do any of them perform wildly different to google?
Dunno - haven't used them enough as of yet to form an opinion.
It's important to point out that when I want to do a quick query, it's either in the url bar (in Chrome) or the search engine box (in FF) and both of them are using Google at the moment. However, I have recently started using Do Not Track Plus and HTTPS Everywhere add-ons for both browsers although HTTPS Everywhere is making Google default to google.com rather than google.co.uk which isn't always what I want, so I may jettison that if it becomes a PITA as it's degrading the information from my search queries when I'm searching to find the cheapest place to buy something.

Haven't used Blekko as yet but this whole list was derived from a lifehacker post about search engines. I'm a slave to lifehacker on an RSS feed atm :D.

I hate bing with a passion. And it has a stupid Microsoft name. They have other software products called Sway and Chocolatey.

For fucks sake.

Use Bing a fair amount on account of Google being blocked here and not wanting to use VPN all the time. It is pretty useless for finding anything but the easier stuff IME but then feel like Google has got worse too.
