Wouldn't count on it mate - she was a bit of a rude moody bugger according to Maya Angelou
I'd still vote for her though because I have always melted at the sound of her voice....and wept when I heard the later recordings, with her lovely voice all fucked up and cracked, and her forgetting the words to the songs, repeating herself, and singing nonsensical words
No, she didn't do happy very much, but I'm a sucker for tortured torch songs, and songs that make you stand stock still and be shocked into silence - such a fucking happy soul I am
Last year Martin Smith toured with his 'Sinatra - when ole blues eyes was a red' talk, film and music evening (book of the same title, refers to MCarthy era when Sinatra leaned to the left, includes original research). Proceeds of tour went to Socialist Worker Appeal (Martin Smith is National Organiser of the SWP).
This year Martin Smith has toured with his Billie Holiday - why the lady sang the blues talk, film and musi evening. Proceeds the same.
Apparently he was invited to do a radio show on the back of these talks but had to decline - not enough time in the day.
Of the two the Sinatra tour was better because it shed genuine new light on to the subject. However, my vote has to go to Billie Holiday. Sinatra is the cooler end of background music imo. Holiday simply can't be talked over. Just sit in awe.
