Bikes on Buses - no chance?

Did it yesterday and hopefully tomorrow - twice in three days . . .

Anyway, tinkering with the route as, I'm sure, everyone does:

Herne Hill St > Railton Rd
Shakespeare Rd > Loughborough J
Submarine > St Agnes Place > Penton Place

The interesting part if the Elephant; after spotting some cyclists yesterday, it looks like the cut through (Chyd Row) is the way forward - I want to end up back on course at St Giles Circus. So cross Brook Drive . . . ?

Any thoughts?

Just whip one of the wheels off and you should be fine getting on a bus. I have done it a few times with no problems.

I've taken my bike on bus (not in London though) at about 9pm with the wheel(s) off and the saddle lowered before. This was due to a puncture caused by a deep pot hole, not due to drunkenness, although I had had been in the pub drinking a few pints before the puncture occurred. It was too dark for me to fix the puncture and it's too far to walk without significant leg pain. The bike was also strapped to my courier bag so that I could carry it on my back when I got off the bus. I knew that the driver wouldn't really have a good reason to stop me because when it's been dismantle it's no longer a bike but 'bicycle components' and it doesn't take up much space - no more than a small pram. During peak time this most probably wouldn't work - way too crowded. I think any decent person driving a bus would let you on if your bike was unrideable due to puncture or broken parts, providing you took the wheels off or providing that the bus was fairly empty. I've had to do it before when the trains have been cancelled due to engineering works and there was no replacement bus service.

I've been on a bus where a driver refused to pick up a guy who'd got a puncture on a mountain bike, but it's not really surprising is it? A regular bike takes up loads of room! :D

Fold up bikes I have seen on buses though :)

However a nice 133 driver took pity on me at Elephant when that happened and let me get on back to Brixton. Bus was reasonably busy too :)
