Bike Stolen :(

Saddle might be a wingflex.. not that it matters!

both the Ariones are wingflex - just means that the sides flex as you pedal, supposed to improve power output or some other outrageous marketing claim.

I love cycle marketing :)

Yes! It's true! 30mm of carbon fibre diddlywidget really will make an appreciable difference to your speed!

Not insured.. can get another bike through the cycle to work scheme, so not worth it.

I checked my old policy though, Cycleguard, and they wouldn't have paid up!
Why wouldn't they have paid up? I'm interested 'cos I'm with cycleguard. Surely they would pay up if your bike was locked to an immovable object with an approved lock....

Fixies are a false economy IMO. Plus you're bound to turn into one of those annoying grumpy twats who refuses to slow down for crossing pedestrians for fear of losing all that invested energy.
Huh? By braking you don't lose any more 'invested' energy than you would on a freewheel bike.

Fixies arent a false economy, they're just cheaper to run, easier to maintain, and alright for travelling short distances (e.g. in city centres). Every type of bike has its use...

I've had my bike nicked twice in the last three years and it's a shit feeling so my condolences on your loss. I won't leave my bike locked up anywhere out of sight these days. Too many professional bike thieves prowling around.

the reluctance to stop on fixies comes from the fact that it's harder to push off from a dead stop. plus, I'm told that the feeling of direct power to the wheels is far too adictive to stop :)

I don't know if that is entirely fair. There can be a certain pleasure in the controlled stop which can be achieved on a fixie... from time to time.

The only reason I can see that it is harder to pull off is that since you are single speed you can't drop down to a lower gear as you stop.

 This thread has made me so paranoid:(
I've had a bike stolen before in Deptford a few years ago, I had only had it a few days, left it locked up outside the local swimming pool, came out and it was gone. The bike I have at the moment is a bit old and rusty looking and I've not had any further bike theft trouble.
However I'm getting a new bike this month, I've wan a competition and the prize is a £500 Saracen mountain bike:cool: , they said it will be delivered to me in the next few weeks, I'm made up about this, but I'm going to be gutted if it gets robbed from me:(

The mountain bike parked next to mine was stolen 2 days ago :(

The owner had locked it up with a cable lock, the fool

And he found out that there's no CCTV on the bike stands... no-one saw anything...

I had my wheel nicked a coupla years ago in Bolton, i caught up with the lad carrying the wheel pretty closebye, I took the wheel off him and snatched his phone from round his neck and crushed it on the floor, then I walked off having managed to not kill the cunt.
Ya gotta be proactive with your t-leafs innit.

A bike has been put up for sale on gumtree, my bike isn't a massive rarity, but it's not very common. Unfortunaly the mobile number on the ad is one digit short so I can't make enquiries to check if it might be mine.

Not sure how I'd handle it if I did find out it was mine. Possibly arrange to meet him and bring a few mates along, tell the dude I'm gonna be taking it as it's mine, point out the mates just round the corner, and suggest it might be in his interest to fuck off.

Yeah I would do the same.
You could try going through the digits til you find the full number:)

Bear in mind that the person selling it may not be the thief. And they may not even have any guilty knowledge whatsoever - they could have bought it themselves in good faith for reasonable value.

Beware that you may commit criminal offences (including theft of your own property) if you take the course you describe.

You should build in the police at some stage - if you could be sure that it was yours now then you could invite them to help you arrange the meet and recover the bike. I doubt if they would on the basis it "may" be, though it would be wise to contact them, tell them what is happening and give them the opportunity to assist.

If you go ahead on your own, perhaps you could have some sort of code signal arranged with your mates so that if you find it IS yours you can signal to them to call the police (999 - we've just found someone with a stolen bike and they're trying to get away so were detaining them - more dramatic the better!) whilst you employ some delaying tactics. If they don't then come, revert to plan A and you can demonstrate that you have done everything you could to do it "properly" but the police failed you.

Beware about using force - you can lawfully use "reasonable and necessary" (i.e. proportionate) force if:

- you honestly believe force is about to be used on you (it must be a future threat - it is not a power to retaliate unless there is a continuing threat of more) - this is "self-defence" or
- to make a lawful arrest (you would need to be sure the bike was yours and that you had reasonable grounds to believe that the person concerned was the thief (a bit more than simple possession, perhaps something said or done when you meet). (this is citizens arrest).

If the bike is yours and the person claims that it was bought in good faith, advise them that now they know that it is stolen if they do anything (sell, destroy, abandon) with it (apart from keep it until the matter is resolved by the Courts) then they will be committing an offence (probably theft) themselves, even if they haven't already.

Cheers db.. interestingly I think I've seen my bike in the front window of a bike shop. How should I proceed with this? Go down and ask them to hand it over? Go down there, confirm it's mine, then call the police and stay there until they turn up?

Take proof of ownership with you. Show them this and ask them to hand it over. If they don't hand it over, then call the police. I hope you've already reported the bike stolen to the police, as that will help you to get it back (in addition to the proof of ownership).

Their phone number doesn't work, will have to go down at lunch. Can't find any proof of ownership, but I'm sure work will have something.

Covered by work insurance, my new £1200 racer should be delivered next week

Get an "Almax" chain its the only one worth having. Remember thieves will chop a frame just to get at components if necesary, so camoflage the bike. Rat it by taking off decals, spray it matt black etc.

^did you organise the cycle at work scheme - how does it all work?

Your work has to agree to it and arrange the whole thing, not sure of the ins and outs to be honest. Just means half price bikes, paid off interest free over the year

Any thief worth his salt will be able to tell that a Colnago covered in electrical tape is still a Colnago. Sure it stops kids taking an interest but two decent locks will make a kid move on, and kids don't know the difference between a Colnago and a Specialized anyway; in fact the dumb fucks probably think the Spesh is the better bike.

Besides, you don't need to chop a frame to get the components off - you need a set of allen keys.

Fucked if I'm spending money on a bling frame and then ratting it - I'd rather buy a 2nd bike that I could deal with getting nicked.

Exactly - all the bikes we had nicked (bar 2) were ones we've bought specifically for leaving outside. The ones we really care about (in general) don't get locked up outside anyway - although we have lost one that way. :( But sometimes I think, no matter what you do - they go. :(

Yeah, this bike looks too good to be fucked with.. only ever going to leave it locked at home, or in the secure parking at work. Will ride my shitty £30 off ebay mountain bike on days I'll be going elsewhere.
