OP - consider whether the Frodo-like paranoia over keeping an eye on a beautiful expensive bike is worth the bother and whether you wouldn't rather enjoy the peace of mind in getting a decent-ish second hand one.

makes very little difference - if it aint locked up properly they'll nick anything.

Absolutely right, but for normal commute duties and locked up in public places, I've got two retired mtbs running slicks on solid forks, all nicely rusted and taped to discourage thieving.

This is just for some fun and a bit of touring.
