Bike locks

Maybe just trying to prove a point? ;)

I thought I had already said this but: I have an Abus Steel-O-Flex 100cm and wear it around my waist when I ride, it's so convenient that way BUT someone on another website was saying that some nurse ('s dentist's sister's boyfriend etc) had told him that wearing it around your waist would risk shattering your pelvis if you ever fell off...

or even just bruising your kidneys....nice.

I used to cart myself all over town with a giagantic Kryptonite NY chain around my waist (before the bic pen ordeal); but my lower back turned into the Himalayas. Now I just carry a mid-size On Guard U-Lock (slips right into my rack while I'm riding), which I slip through the frame and the rear wheel and I always take my front wheel off the bike when I can't bring the whole thing indoors with me.

That set-up didn't stop thieves from stealing my handlebars; but that's the bitter reality of leaving your bike unattended in the middle of the night in San Francisco's Mission District.

A Bike Thief Says: I researched after i had my bike stolen last weekend... basically no lock is safe! good thieves go round in vans and carry liquid nitrogen to put on locks and then smash them with a hammer, or even angle grinders... the only failsafe thing is to not leave bikes outside. of course, opportunist thieves will be put off by a good lock.

That's what this security guard said to me when I had my bike nicked but is it really true?

i found it difficult to believe, but the guy who told me wrote a book on cycling in London and interviewed former bike thieves. who knows I guess, i'm sure most don't carry such things!

It may well be true, but that's where the gaffa tape part comes in. These sorts of highly organised bike thieves aren't going to waste their time on a grotty looking bike that isn't going to be an easy quick sale. Top that off with a simple lock to ward off the "pick it up and ride it off" opportunists, and I reckon you're on to a winner.

my bike looked pretty shit, but was taken anyway cos it had a very cheap d-lock i think... but i think the fact of it being a bit shit would have put off the pro thieves. still, i bought a more expensive lock now.
