Bike broke (26 inch MTB) - need new one quickly :(

I reckon I may be about to spend £80 to get a 19 year old frame welded. Hopefully it won't be too painful carrying it there and back.
Doubtless it would cost me at least as much to buy a secondhand one...

EDIT:- perhaps not... someone elsewhere mentioned post-welding heat treatment.
I'm now on a quest to find a similar bike or just a frame.
I would not enjoy failure on the road at speed in traffic ...

My bike is now a frame and a box of parts.
I have some local feelers out for a suitable frame or SH bike of a similar kind.
There was a classy stell frame going in Gloucester - a challenge to get to - but also strictly rim brakes.
I reckon it might always have been too big for me based on recommendations for new bikes.
I'm 6 foot 2 and 31 I/L and this is a 23 inch frame marked "XL"
Around the middle of next week things get urgent - unless I'm sick, or I'm deemed "non-essential"...

Are you saying chains last you two years each?
Probably about that.perhaps only 18 months / 2500 miles.
I used to have all the chains, chain wheels and cassettes saved up for the recycling centre.
My commutes include rough roads and tracks and I don't have the patience for deep cleaning and rotation.
I'm working my way through a stack of cheap chains and cassettes I bought years ago.
I get through sram mechs too..

I put out feelers on nextdoor.co.uk and someone had an unstarted project - frame sounds nigh-on identical size, but she's now thinking perhaps her son will find the time and motivation now he's off school ...

2500 miles ain't that much I suppose. I can't remember how often I changed mine when I was doing 5k a year.

Buy one of these: Wiggle | Park Tool Cyclone Chain Scrubber CM-5.2 | Cleaning Equipment

A good rep bike shop in town who I've dealt with in the past says they may well have a similar frame or whole bike - so if the local contact doesn't work out, I'll head off into town tomorrow.
Fortuitously I recently bought a complete set of replacement cables for a spring clean, so I might have something rideable by Monday :)

Such a shame I was so careless with that frame - I reckon it would have seen me through to my tricycle dotage ...

Just spotted this locally for £200 - I get an immediately rideable bike and bonus functioning fork and disc brakes out of it - similar frame quality to my Giant ?
I fully plan to have two bikes at some point ...
I'm guessing they may be the original tyres ...

Hiya, sorry to jump on your thread GG - Im in a similiar situation - bike got knicked, really want one before lockdown

I dont really know a thing about bikes - theres 4 here near me on ebay - would really appreciate advice

Maybe a bit knackered? Not sure what the reserve is either. Looks like it needs money putting in on top, so wary .

Looks alright - more than I want to pay but is it worth it?

also two oldskool bikes
and

^^^look cool and vintage but will they be a shit ride? Im 6'1. 22" and 21" frame too small?
ive never riden an old skool racer - changing gears looks a hassle

The Wilier looks ok - Miguel Angel Lopez rides a Wilier now. The seller is a fucking liar though - 5800 105 arrived in 2014 not 2016.

Old bikes are shit, don't waste your money.

I rode old 10 speeds in Bristol for 10 years and I struggle to remember how I used the gears - I had to get off and push a lot... there are a lot of trendy young chaps who do away with the gears altogether ...

I have felt for quite a while that my 23 inch "XL" frame was actually too big for me - I'm 6'2 with a 31 I/L and I have a handlebar riser and was perched high on the thing to get reasonable efficiency - mind you I'm a bit weird riding moderate distance on an MTB, but I was doing that at a BMI of 33 ...

Certainly all the online bike sizing suggests a "L" frame would be the right one for me

Oh well. I've just asked the guy for the frame number - let's see if he chickens out - not that many people actually register their bikes ...

60 year old guy walks into a bike shop ...
A shame I'm going to spoil it by attaching all my gubbins :D

Steel frame /Deore / hydraulic brakes ... I have a bike with at least one "Cane Creek" thingy on it !

£430 - only immediate issue is the front cogs are Octalink and I don't have a tool - or a clue ...
