Don't forget the araldite !I am mildly suprised/disappointed you're not fixing it yourself with chopsticks and jubilee clips.
Are you saying chains last you two years each? We're talking 20 years of commuting here 10 chains, multiple sprockets,
Probably about that.perhaps only 18 months / 2500 miles. Are you saying chains last you two years each?
2500 miles ain't that much I suppose. I can't remember how often I changed mine when I was doing 5k a year.Probably about that.perhaps only 18 months / 2500 miles.
I used to have all the chains, chain wheels and cassettes saved up for the recycling centre.
My commutes include rough roads and tracks and I don't have the patience for deep cleaning and rotation.
I'm working my way through a stack of cheap chains and cassettes I bought years ago.
I get through sram mechs too..
Had a couple of those - they don't last long... and the scale is much too small.2500 miles ain't that much I suppose. I can't remember how often I changed mine when I was doing 5k a year.
Buy one of these: Wiggle | Park Tool Cyclone Chain Scrubber CM-5.2 | Cleaning Equipment

I'm guessing they may be the original tyres ...
I don't think so, that's a 2004 model and it would have come with Bontrager tyres.
Those Hayes disk brakes are good (by 2004 standards) but use Imperial sized Allen bolts.
Curious .. I suppose it's been cleaned, but I can't imagine anyone taking a bike that old off-road ...I don't think so, that's a 2004 model and it would have come with Bontrager tyres.
I rode old 10 speeds in Bristol for 10 years and I struggle to remember how I used the gears - I had to get off and push a lot... there are a lot of trendy young chaps who do away with the gears altogether ...^^^look cool and vintage but will they be a shit ride? Im 6'1. 22" and 21" frame too small?
ive never riden an old skool racer - changing gears looks a hassle

Just seems like an old MTB is more of a utility vehicle than something you trust your bones on ...Why not?

to be fair, though I ride a mountain bike, the riskiest thing I ever do is drop off a kerb now and again !Depends entirely on how regularly they've been used and how well they've been maintained.
/walks away shaking head wondering how people know such things
