Bike Bag for air travel

When i flew with american, heathrow to jfk, they gave us bike boxes at check in for free. I think this must have been provided by baggage handling (cant see the airline themselves doing this). So if you trust a box it might be worth asking about that. Fwiw our four bikes arrived ok.

Haven't took a bike on a plane for a long time now but when i did i just made the bike flat then tied cardboard to it like a sandwich. That way it was easy to carry as i just held it by the frame and i could be on the road in a couple of minutes.

The problem i had was keeping the weight down.

The offer extends to you too Sir Filter should you need to borrow :)

Nice one, much appreciated

I might ride the Danube from Germany to Budapest again next year, bit flat, but that suits Mrs Filter.

bargain at £50.

gaijingirl, you're welcome to borrow my hard shell case if you want, its not going to get used until next summer now.

Thanks SF! We may well take you up on the offer over Crimbo - we're thinking of spending the new year (and Crimbo itself if I get my way!) cycling around Hvar where there's some excellent roads and mountains/ridges (where gaijinboy's family are from). We could put his bike in it - mine's not worth as much so a soft bag will have to do I think.

(ETA I'm also trying to persuade him that a pair of folding bikes would be good Christmas presents too - not for that kind of long cycling holiday but for all the times we have nightmares getting our bikes on trains for w/ends away when the bastard train companies won't let us on their trains during commuting hours).

BTW morzine was coooool, did more or less destroy my trusty vintage Rock Hopper though :( still, will be getting a spanky new hardtail for this years effort :)

I should say that we did borrow SF's hard case (thanks again!) to take our nice road bikes overseas. I also bought the soft case he recommended which is excellent. The hard case totally protected gaijinboy's bike - but it also was too big and heavy to enter the plane hold and make it up the conveyor belt.

We watched the baggage handlers struggle to get it onto the plane and also watched as it fell from the cabin hold onto the concrete below.. a good long fall! Gaijinboy did not enjoy that plane journey - convinced all was lost. Luckily the hard case kept it all in shape.

Mine, in the soft case, however, proved to be much less troublesome - we also watched that being loaded and it was fine - no problems at all and no damage - the padding is quite extensive on the bag i bought and we supplemented it with pipe lagging from B&Q.

We did also buy two folding bikes which we've just taken away for a week in Zagreb. One of those did get a bit bent on the plane as we were unable to find a suitable smaller bike bag for them - so ended up improvising with bubble wrap, pipe lagging and laundry bags - but nothing too serious. We do need to find a better solution though for plane travel with the folders.
