Big Green Gathering cancelled due to police & district council pressure:

oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

wasn't there some talk about it becoming very corporatised in order to keep running, a while back?
or am i confusing that with northern green? :)

Over priced in the extreme. I know they have to deal with big police bills these days, but it aint value for money.

Having said that, most of the people i know that go blag thier way in working for some campaign or other.

If you get in for free it is pretty good, but best ever? Not by a long chalk .... treworgey, the forest fairs, harvest fair, early glastonburys, shambala, endorse it, larmer tree, workhouse, stonehenge, castlemorton .... there is a huge list of contenders above this one.

It's back..! July 29th - 2nd August 2009
Or maybe not if the injunction is granted on Monday.
I have just been informed by the directors that they are going to the high court in London on Monday to fight a potential injunction being put in by the Authorities to stop The BGG happening.

The Directors are requesting that everyone hold off on further plans in heading to The Big Green Gathering until the hearing in london outcome has been announced.
After seeking various proffessional legal advice, and with good legal support available to BGG. The Directors believe there is a 50/50 chance of them overcoming the threatened injunction and are doing every single thing they can to make there be a BGG 09.

There will be updates on The BGG Website of what is happening. If anyone is in London, do feel free to take banners to raise attention and to support the Bg Green Gathering event.

I was in the middle of packing the vans, ready to set off tomorrow morning when I got this message.

In 2009? And you're prepared to contribute how, exactly?

Situationists c1968: "the spectator is a beast"

Poor old BGG, Mendip council always seem to have it in for them, is it because they get used to demanding anything from Glastonbury ?

Not sure what you are getting at here, but i will have a go at responding.

"in 2009?" .... no, its not even the best festival in 2009. Workhouse, Celtic blue rock, endorse it in Dorset, boomtown fair, shambala, larmer tree, Nozstock ... all above big green on the list.

"And you're prepared to contribute how, exactly?" ... erm.. nothing, i will be at another event this year.

"the spectator is a beast" ... i wont be spectating either.

I was not knocking the event, or people who go, it is quite a nice little gig and i have no doubt i will find myself working there in the future, just pointing out that it is overpriced and is certainly not the best festival EVER.

I hope the high court thing goes well and the festival goes ahead

The Green gathering is dead
Dear Friends, following threatened injunction proceedings in High Court by Mendip District Council supported by Somerset & Avon Police and having taken extensive advice from a prominent QC and other eminent lawyers, the directors of the Big Green Gathering have been left with no other option than to voluntarily surrender the license for the Big Green Gathering 2009. The event will now not take place and the directors' advice and request is that no one intending to attend the event should attempt to do so, as the site is now closed and they are likely to be turned away by Somerset Police. It is our intention to avoid any form of confrontation or public disorder in regard to this and it is our earnest hope that all those involved will follow this advice. It is with great sadness that we have been forced into this position and we express our profound apologies to all those concerned. The Directors of The Big Green Gathering

Not being a big fan of hedonistic festivals, the BGG is the only one I have ever attended:, this is disgraceful, my friends week has been ruined, and as for the children who looked forward to the magic of it all, well I am so sorry for them, Brig and Co(the directors, all good people) will lose thousands. How can the ASP and Mendip council do this at such short notice?

btw, has this country really become more progressive, liberal, one does wonder, now if this was a big corporate event....

*Tinfoil Hat Alert*

The timing is, maybe, at suspiciously short notice. It's almost as though the authorities wanted to do the BGG just as much damage as was possible.

So, now that the BGG is not happening this year, that does raise the question of whether it will ever happen again, I suppose. I'm not sure if, after the financial woes that led to there being no BGG last year and the BGG being cancelled this year as well, whether or not they'll be able to recover from this series of problems.

I'd be very surprised if they don't go bankrupt. As far as I can tell the corporate backer got his money back from advance ticket sales and resigned as financial director, leaving the BGG to rely on a last minute over draft. Ticket sales weren't good anyway and various key people have resigned, so I can't see this incarnation having any future.

However to due a number of issues including road and fire safety that could not be resolved the event organisers surrendered their licence.

EH? they have been running this event for years, with no road or fire safety problems worrying the authorities before. Suddenly it becomes an issue AFTER the event has been given a licence. Barmy!

I seem to remember two years ago there was a big issue around 'target hardening' the event, to protect it from terrorist attack.... (See excuses for bigger police presence and bill).

Why the hell dont they come out with it and say what the problem is?

No doubt the site is pretty much ready, a lot of hard work for nothing and a lot of unrecoverable cost for a lot of people.

Condolences to all those that had planned their week (summer?) around this event. Plenty of other events next weekend, but clearly not with the same ethos as this one.

crap, that's our kids and their mates holidays screwed then (not to mention ours) :(

Same here.:(
I was taking my daughter's friends too.
Plus this is crazily short notice. I've lost 20 quid on the train tickets, and I do wonder when (and indeed, if) BGG will get around to refunding my ticket money.

No tinfoil hat needed. I think it stinks

Indeed. I think they were landed with £120,00 bill for policing it the other year which was a significant factor in it nearly going under.

Both organisations (council and police) also believed that there was a potential risk of crime and disorder

Why? Has the BGG got any history of this? Or is it a crime to be a hippy? :hmm:

Ultimately the council has to maintain the four licensing objectives; prevent crime and disorder, prevent public nuisance, maintain public safety and protect children from harm.

Are we talking about the same green gathering?

Crime and disorder? The BGG is the least disorderly event i have been to.

Public Nuisance? Its on top of a mountain miles from anywhere for f*cks sake

Protect children from harm? As previous posters have indicated, this is a very family oriented event. I cant think of an event where kids would be safer.

Mendip District Council is already an award-winner and nationally recognised for its licensing of Europe's largest festival - Glastonbury held in Somerset in June.

Oh yeah.... and world famous for doing everything it possibly could to prevent Glastonbury happening until it got too big to stop. They are the reason last years recydrate the West ended up being in Wales.

The least they could do is be honest about their intentions. F*cking tories
