Tbh ES, that doesn't sound like the BC I went to...I was camping on the family field so maybe it was different to 'general population' 
but it was very relaxed. I didn't see any security at all (which I was a bit pissed off at - I'd read on the BC website that they were upping security due to tent thefts last year but I didn't see anyone the whole weekend. Didn't get robbed either, but I heard some people did) and def not the heavy-handed stuff your mate saw.
As for 'treading weed into the ground' etc - they weren't doing that in and around the stages/stalls (that I saw) Sunday in particular was more like a weed festi than anything else - everywhere you looked people were skinning up with no grief. I wandered around with a spliff or a pipe in my hand the whole weekend and never got hassle
As for the wardens, yup, they were useless but not because they were causing bottlenecks. More because they weren't really checking wristbands. Most of them were young women with one security bloke 'overseeing' saying things like 'whiskey foxtrot tango bluebottle' into a radio self-importantly.
The only time I couldn't get where I wanted to go was on Sat night trying to get into the field where the Club Tent and Lost Vagueness were. Not any worse than at Glasto or Reading or whatever.
I had a blinding time and would def go back again. The first time I've been to a festi with kids and it worked out fine (tho dealing with a Lil'FA tantrum on Sunday morning after being mangled to fuck on mdma the night before wasn't the most fun I've ever had). Nightmares On Wax were blinding (apart from that beatbox bloke...), Jose Gonsalez (sp?) was excellent and whoever it was I saw on various stages between 11 & 2 on sat night/sun morning were out of focus but brilliant...

They had all the black "combat" gear on
and the fluorescent bibs and stuff - in fact, including the other people with them with walkie-talkies, there was probably about 10 of them.They searched 'em for a good 10 minutes while a crowd gathered gawping, then disappeared without finding "stuff". The peeps just sat there then all the combat boys charged back 10 minutes later and carted them off - it was totally over the top but i didn't see them being heavy handed.

I was racking out in clear view of most people, in fact, when I chucked some chang in a spliff, someone came up to me and said "watch what you put inna rizla" Different Drummer stylee - how we laughed
But these stories are scary, unless the people were knocking out industrial quantities of drugs - nowt wrong with that!
Why did they sit there and wait for them to come back?

It was a bit mad, but i was sat only 10ft away smoking some really strong weed, so everything was a bit mad really....
Like you, i had no grief.
That thought did enter my (addled) mind - if they were knocking out tons of drugs why didn't the combat boys find it first time, and why would the peeps not shuffle off quietly afterwards.

There was a thread on BC forum about some people who got their nitrous kit confiscated as the festi didn't want NOx balloons all over the place. I'm sure I read that they were again checked when inside incase they had sneaked any more through. Sounds like it was that as the security/wardens etc have never ever cared about people smoking weed or whatever.
I didn't really see any balloons so suspect it may be true.

Balloons are easy to spot and pick up, so, although it sort of makes sense, it also makes no sense at all
