Big Chill 2006

Cool hiccup.

They've just announced that Lost Vagueness will be there...what's all that about then?

Dunno, but it was the best bit of glastonbury the last couple of times I went, so pretty cool hopefully.

im dam tempted, i had tickets but sold them to a mate,
but still might get last minutes tickets sumwhere.

im working in malvern the 2 weeks before so will be in the area.

they need more proper cider tho, westons and other local herefordian cider places are not far away.

im marshalling a 24 hour bike event at eastnor this weekend, fingers crossed for good weather, that place is so nice with great weather.

After last year, I've given up on the Big Chill.

It was *awful*.

The loos were worse than Glasto circa late 1980s (and believe me, that's bad!), the queue for beer stretched into infinity and beyond (it took Eme an *hour* to get served one night), there was a distinct lack of decent cider, most of the bands were blander than bland and there was an unbearable smugness about the place.

Tell me about it.....I didnt think the queues were that much of a problem, but the smugness, lack of security competency and general feeling of 'paying a lot for not a lot' put me right off.

But now they go and announce Lost Vagueness, The Blue Man Group, DJ Format, AND Tom Middleton/Fred Deakin!!

FOOK

Whats your alternative Ed? Any ideas?

I agree with Editor - won't be going there again, it's way too big nowadays.

Larmer Tree Gardens was the best venue.

This 'smugness' you talk of...all I could sense was a lot of people having a fucking great time, myself included. I'm sorry it wasn't the same for you.

e2a, I've just read the above and it does indeed sound 'smug', ah well.

I had a good time last year, toilets didn't seem that bad, no memorable queues for beer, lots of wicked music, lots of people having a good time.

Diff'rent strokes...

Wow - you had a bad time :( I had a great time last year.

I didn't have any trouble with queues or loos.

The music was anything but bland: Trojan Soundsystem, Underground Resistance, Mad Professor, Fatback Band, A Certain Ratio, The Beat...

I guess I know what you mean about the smugness, but I was with enough lovely people for it not to bother me. It has got a noticably bigger and less personal in the few years I've been going, but it's still far better than any of the corporate festivals that seem to exist purely to separate punters from their money.

Dunno if I'm going this year yet - depends on how many friends are going vs cost of tix.

Me neither, still, the only reason I'll go again this year is cos of lack of a decent alternative.

that sounds bad. ive been to the four previously to last year and they weren't like that, although i did employ the 'follow the shit truck' tactic to get fresh khazi's.

however two at that site was more than enough. it was like a proper festival with the volume turned down - and the smugness factor as you say was worse.
plus the live in vehicle costs were a pisstake.. for £40 i expect to be carried up that hill

the one's @ larmer were

well im going:o ..im stewarding there for oxfam as well as at latitude and end of the road,
big chill should be alright for a freebie..im a big fan of sparks:D thats why i chose to go,despite some missgivings about bigger/more corporate festivals like big chill.

i wanted to steward at womad and green man but they didnt need anyone eles sadly...so i didnt have all that many left to work at....the good thing about stewarding is you tend to get secure, quieter, lagger lout free (that is no one TRYING to be as loud as possible at 4am)campsites and cleaner toliets for workers

..if i had paid £100 for big chill i would expect clean toliets,it sounds really bad editor i hope they sort this out..where does the money go????
more and more of us are asking that..
i think there is small backlash against the prices for festies going higher and getting more and more bland...fortunately there are more and more people putting on there own this summer with the right ideals behind them

oi all you people going to the big chill should visit the nearby city of hereford about 15 miles away... i live right in the city center :)

I'm going.

I'm planning to be quite smug. Right up until the point where Lil'FA refuses to go to sleep. I shall then quite probably be aggrieved and not a little irritated.

Take a pushchair.

Spending most of my evenings carrying my three year old son over that hill from the live-in camper field lost it's charm in a very short space of time, believe me!

Yeh, the days of 'rock up with a bin bag and and a tin of drugs' are sadly long gone. The roof box on my car is so big it looks like some strange animal is actually shagging my motor. Lil'FA's 'inner circle' of cuddly toys and other odds n sods are a bootful on their own ffs... :)

despite going for the last god knows how many years and moaning about the; toilets / music / security / not as good as Lamar Tree Gardens , i'm going again this year

but not camping on that motherfucking hill

I can't wait. I always 100% enjoy the big chill.

There are loads of similar small festivals and free parties if you mind about the size of the audience. I don't mind the crowd, it just pains me to dodge them when pissed! :)

If you want it small and free festi check out the Newstead Treehugging Festival. It's free and family friendly - plus a night time rave all in one.

On the website it says -

'After feedback from last year's festival, we've made improvements to the festival facilities. More loos, loads more urinals, almost twice as many showers, secure holding areas and other additional security measures and improved mobile phone reception all show our comittment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for Big Chillers to enjoy'

Personally I didn't have too much trouble with the loos last year (although the stink WAS bad!) and thankfully our tent wasn't robbed either - my main problem with it was that the line up wasn't very good. But there's more to interest me this year and I like the sound of what they're doing with the Sanctuary area and art trail, so I think I'll give it another go. Might well be my last time though.

The security were a disgrace last year.

Me: "That guy over there has just taken that girl's bag by dragging it along by his foot. Look. He's the guy just there and he's getting ready to walk out"
Security: "Yeah, thanks. But I can't do anything unless I see them do it myself"

Yup, security totally over-run by Liverpudlians hell bent on robbing everything they could and resorting to violence if caught.

Tranquiliser darts would be a good option IMO, see how much honour amongst theives there is when "Billy Scally" gets a dart in his arse and his friends can't lift him over the fence.

Absolute scum. Hope they get cancer and die screaming.
