Bhutto almost asassinated

And not much of the Glemorangie she used to be so fond of;)

Don't know what the old girl is up to.

Consumate politician, like her Dad. Much good it did him.

I just saw the report on 10pm BBC news.

I don't know what to say, except my Damien Grammaticus is by far my favorite BBC world reporter.

I agree with Detroit City!

I hate the way she is depicted as some nice liberal, progressive politician in most of the mainstream Media here. I cant help but wonder if its because she's a women? When reporting on Sharif they are always a little more scathing!!

She is the Asian Thatcher! Grrr...I hate her, hate her! Double grrrrr!

She seriously turns my stomach, not least because she actually believes in her dynastic right to govern. she’s an aristocratic self-servicing thief who really ought to be in prison. I feel sorry for Pakistan.

excuse my ignorance, but how was a woman even in power in a country like Pakistan??
because her father was in power like 35 years ago and then he was executed after the military took over in a coup.

compared with the taliban and musharraf she is a liberal
more or less gets voted into power
rather than taking power at point of a gun or blowing up anybody who disagrees.

She is on record as saying she intended to take on The Taliban.

They said they would kill her.

I know who's side I'm on.

She could be as corrupt as Blair for all I care.

Lets get this straight - there is nothing radical or heroic about Benazir Bhutto. The scion of an enormously corrupt and unscrupulous family of feudal landlords from Sindh who first gained power exploiting Pakistans ethnic tensions, she was more than happy to use the ISS to foster the Taliban when it suited her interests. She is no doubt be accompanied by her husband 'Mr Twenty Percent' as he's known to Pakistani businessmen.

Other allegations that have always dogged her surround her involvement in the murder of her brother and the attempted assasination of her Mother.

The comments by, presumably, western posters here about the woman don't square with the typical pakistani working people who all seem to love her and see her as the only hope to bring peace and a semblence of justice to their nation.

Oh, the luxury of being an armchair political commentator! Especially in transposing western values onto people in far flung parts of the world.

At that time the Americans were supporting the Taliban also because they wanted to rid Afghanistan of the Russians. Today the Americans want to be rid of the Taliban who took control of Afghanistan on the back of that American support and still have major influence there. Bhutto similarly has changed position in line with the Americans.

It is one of those situations where the unintended consequences prove worse than the original problem. The moral of the story for the Americans is: don't interfere with the internal affairs of independent countries. I heard yesterday that the Americans were telling the Turkish government not to invade Iraq because it was a sovereign state and to so would be illegal. This is a case of 'Do as I say, not as I do'.

As for Bhutto I don't know if there is any substance to the charges of corruption - she is not her father after all, but it would be a good idea if they could be investigated I would have thought.

One of my work colleagues claims that some rich landowners/capitalists have paid their workers to join the welcome home demonstrations to make it look like she is more popular. Plausible d'ya reckon?

Highly likely, the homecoming was in Karachi where the Bhuttos have long had a power base thanks to her fathers exploitation of tensions between Sindhis and Muhajirs (refugees who fled the Republic of India during partition). Bhutto is a member of the powerful feudal landowner class of Sindh who's tenants will do as they're instructed.

Whats interesting is what kind of deal Bhutto has cut with Musharaf, he will certainly be remaining as President with her support and with his placeman as Chief of Staff of the Army, there have also been reports recently that she will be allowed access to the $13,000,000 frozen in her Swiss accounts.

You've answered your own question, in a roundabout way. It's not necessarily because she's a woman, it's because she supports (like Thatcher) neo-liberal politics, and big business and it's media appendages lurve neo-liberalism.

well a neo liberal establishment is going to be better than a miltary dictatorship or the taliban
by quite a wide margin :(

I think you're assuming that genuine democracy would emerge at the same time as the neo-liberal economics. History and common sense (and knowledge of Pakistani politics) says that this won't happen - despite what the neo-cons would have us believe.

So you'll effectively get a neo-liberal dictatorship with the trappings of a parliamentary democracy, alllowing the country to be plundered at will. Not a huge improvement on military dictatorship then.

true
but seeing the options avail some socialist democracy are not even on the horizon
bhutto or talibanisque regime got to be bhutto with her at the helm the rule of law has a chance rather than nonchance under the taliban

She may not be perfect but I have a lot of time for her.

yes, her and her husband are criminals and frauds who have looted millions, if not billions, from their own country.

But it was a disgusting act. You are glad she was not killed and can now run for office, right?

So who are the heroes of Pakistan? If Bhutto is that bad, whom do we measure her against in Pakistan?
