Bethnal Green Unexploded Bomb 10/11 August

Not as hilarious but worth sharing is hipster vicar who joined in the japes in between tending to his elderly and frightened parishioners. Both decent blokes.

Does make you wonder how many more are lying around buried in basements and whatnot.

A lot. They turn up in London and other cities on a fairly regular basis. AFAIK the possibility of having to clear UXBs is worked into the budget and timescale for major construction projects in most major cities. I've just dug up a report prepared in the course of a major infrastructure project on UXB in the Humber area, and at least one has surfaced in the city in the time I've lived here. At least German bombs' detonators usually remain fairly stable, though: British and American ones have tended to become unstable over time, a few have gone off on being disturbed and there may be thousands still buried. IIRC a bulldozer driver was killed when he hit one only a year or two ago.

my dad found an un-exploded bomb at the bottom of our garden in the early 70's. He was digging and kept hitting it with a shovel trying to see what it was. It eventually dawned on him and he gingerly placed a dustbin lid over it and backed away to call 999. The bomb squad came and took it away to explode it and my mum gave the police tea and rock cakes. It was an exciting day! :D
