i am negative because i read the comments and the last one said "that is beautiful". No its not you bafoon, its a fat person in show-business.

i think that person was saying that it's beautiful that the gossip have said to topshop that they won't perform unless they make clothes for larger sizes. ie, it's a good thing that they are taking a stance against hypocracy.

Well, if we're delving into the whole role model thing.. in terms of body size, shouldn't a happy (healthy?) medium be applauded..? Praising Beth Ditto for being fat is kinda swerving to far to the other side of the road.

If she was thin, pretty, shaved her pits and was gay, would anyone care?

Still not articulating myself very well.

But yeah, good on her for the Topshop thing..

I wonder if the press are running out of things to be 'cool with'.. we've done race, done sexuality, doing fat at the moment.. what next? "NME vote average indie singer coolest person of the year because they're ginger and they don't care!".. lame.

i don't think the media is applauding her - most of the articles i've read seem to have an undercurrent of amazement that a fat person has the audacity to walk the streets looking cool, let alone fronting a flavour-of-the-month rock band.

I've seen quite a lot of "good on her for being fat and ugly, but getting out there regardless"

118118 - you say there are fat people everywhere - but there aren't, not in pop music. AOR, sure (moyet, meatloaf... but actually not so many) - but it is breaking new territory for a record company to take a band aimed at kids seriously if they don't conform to the perceived notions of how a femal lead singer should look.

and i think that perception has been most rigid with women.

for me, i think if i were a 17 year old kid with weight problems, the existance of beth ditto's career and media profile might make me feel more empowered. as a 33 year old woman who is fat, i kind of think "good on her". I particualrly likr the fact that when stylists try to put her in flattering black, she insists on wearing stuff that's glitzy and colourful. That's a fuck you attitude i can admire. it takes a lot of balls.
