bestest one-hit wonder ever in the history of the world.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned 'Amother girl, another planet' by The Only Ones yet. Although Wiki informs me that it doesn't count as it was never actually charted anywhere in the world (can't be right, can it?)

and they'd be an example of a moderately successful band, singles apart.

This is why defining a one-hit wonder is tricky.

the whole one hit wonder thing is a bit suss, though. there are bands that might have 25 year careers and rarely release singles, or they may never chart. doesn't mean they're one hit wonders, really
<insert 'ORLY?' picture of choice>

yes - and only one of them was a 'hit'.

do please share yours..

If an artist is generally only known for one single, then they're a one hit wonder.

the fact that they might have had other singles (which are not remembered by anyone apart from hard core fans / music buffs) doesn't disqualify them from being one hit wonders.

(imho, of course)

You're one crazy bastard :D

and you have a rather egocentric way of looking at the world. I'm pretty damn sure a poll would suggest that the majority of people who remembered Tainted Love would remember others as well

Six of the above made the top 10

A single which makes the top 40, is simply a song which made the top 40. It's not necessarily going to be remembered as a hit (if remembered at all in a few weeks time).

Soft Cell aren't generally known for just one track though - what about Bedsitter and Say Hello Wave Goodbye?

But...but....Soft Cell were MASSIVE back in the day. I was by no means a fan at the time ( I was into Duran Duran at the time FFS - I was only 11 though :D ), but some of those songs were bloody everywhere for a few years. So, you're talking through your arse mate.

meh - I'[m fairly sure that if I asked random people who we're sitting near internet access to name 3 soft cell hits, 8/10 would only remember one song.

i'd wager good money you're entirely wrong. However, this is irrelevant - by any sensible (and less selfcentred) definition of one hit wonder, having a string of Top 10 hits would rule someone out :D

The thread title says ' in the history of the world'.

The world includes the USA.

Tainted Love was the only US chart entry by soft cell.

OK, I'm clutching at straws, but am I wrong?
