DotCommunist
So many particulars. So many questions.
The Man In Black FTW.
this is it! folsom/san quentin stuff is cash at his zenith, rather than at his broken nadir of hurt.
The Man In Black FTW.
The thing I don't like about it, is it's an old man, singing a young man's song.
"everyone I know, goes away, in the end"

The cash version just hasn't got the piercing vocals and when divorced from what you know about the man, it isn't as good.
divorcing the man from the music? Your argument is invalid.
And that would still be better than NIN's version. Some French goalkeeper can go whistle![]()

I meant the theorist as you well know dammit.
once you strip the singer/author from a work it can be judged on merit alone and so NIN win
I think its time Dotcommunist accepted that he is wrong.
I shall not. You lot are voting from base emotion informed by the tragedy of a great man bereft of wife and cursing senescence.
My opinion is based purely on the quality of of the actual work and therefor both I and NIN are winners
The only person who is really agreeing with you is kained&able, and he is frequently wrong about everything, ever.

Yeah, but if you were fighting a war and suddenly realised the bloke leading you was Hitler, you'd realise you're wrong.

I'm suprised at just how big a landslide this poll has been tbh.
The cash version just hasn't got the piercing vocals and when divorced from what you know about the man, it isn't as good.
I don't agree. his interpretation of it suits him perfectly. It is a different interpretation to the original, reflecting on his life at it's end rather than coming to a point early on when he feels he can't go further, but it still works
Johnny Cash's version is so obviously the better version; NIN's is just pointless now.
It's still the same lyrics. About the same thing.
words can have different meanings depending on their context
Does that mean anything tho?Personally, I was embarrassed for Cash when I heard that song.
Yeah, but it's cool and with it to like everything about Johnny Cash.
