appaling list of choices. Of the ones listed early Human League. but they were nothng like as good as Cabaret Voltaire, or even Clock DVA. Or Hawkwind

Tis Soft Cell. Great songs, sleezy, decadent, whiff of danger, great frontman.

Depeche mode were great when they were a pop band - but became very dull when they went all seri-arse.

Pet Shop Boys - boring boring boring boring droning gits. 'Detached', 'cool', 'ironic' , 'arch' = shit.

Art of Noise - responisble for some of the most horrible 80s synth sound - and thats saying something.

Howard Jones - utter shit. Like a bad dream involving hair gel and the most annoying kid at school.

New Order dont count as a synth band - although Blue Monday is genius.

There is a heavy bias in this thread towards ignoring things that are newer than the 1980's or feature females.
New Order, The Human league, The Thompson Twins and Yazoo all feature females.

As for the 'old school' nature of this thread, it's cos it was inspired by the superb Synth Britannia programme, and the poll is of bands who were featured in it. It concetrated on the synth pioneers, not the later ones who used synths when they had become ubiquitous.

I think everyone is just going on the choices given by the thread starter and what was on the Synth Britannia documentary, I don't think everyone on this thread is a misogynistic Luddite if that's what you were getting at? ;)

i never did y'know? i picked up 'untitled' the other week, which is ok... i guess i've always been underwhelmed by marcs solo output: it generally strikes me as worthwile but uninteresting iyswim.

anyway, you've reminded me - i'll acquire it today at some point...

Yeah untitled is the poor cousin, but still has its moments...

Human League were terrific at first - still one of the best and most original live acts I ever went to see - and then when they remade/remodelled and drafted the girls in (which personally I didn't like so much) they changed pop music forever. So I'm gonna have to give them the nod. Oh and Phil Oakey's a decent bloke too.

Also worth a mention - Depeche Mode, whose transition from drippy synthy pop boys next door to stadium filling electro doomsters was quite an achievement, even if they weren't that interesting.

I see this thread has caused a bit of a stir. Hey, you can't please everyone. :D

Ahh ok thanks for the explanation - I wasnt meaning to suggest misogyny or trapped in a timewarp effects at work, I was just very confused about the relatively narrow scope of options & discussion on this thread. If it was based on a program that featured specific artists then that explains it, ta.

The thing with depeche mode is that I love their 80s stuff like Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence, they're great pop songs, it's when they tried to reinvent themselves as sort of pop-industrial in the 90s that they were nowhere near as good.

I was amused to see that stylophones are on sale again!

that varg vykernes or whatever he's called who was in that norwegian death metal band and killed a member of some other band (mayhem?) recorded a 'death metal' album using only a stylophone whilst in prison.

I'd go for Human League on that list. Was right into Travelogue when it came out. Also dug John Foxx at the time.

Watching that BBC prog the other night it was all bit obvious how few of them could really play their instruments - a total lack of fluency and swing in their playing. But it worked at the time

Yeah, i'm a big fan of that unquantized ham fisted vibe.

'seconds' by Human league is a phenomenal song. i must played that out a thousand times.

Early John Foxx era Ultravox ('Hiroshima' etc) is great too, but they also had guitars & drums.
