it is rather a cracker. isn't it based on a poem by someone else (can't remember who off hand)?

could never decide..

Nirvana - Big Long Now
Smashing Pumpkins - Soma
Faith No more - Mid-Life Crisis
Source ft Candi Station - You got the love

apart from Original Nuttah

I am mostly voting for

Loving You - Minnie Ripperton
Love Theme from Spartacus - Terry Callier
Theme to The Good The Bad and The Ugly - Ennio Morricone

and, of course most songs by the Smiths

Thought of another......

Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack

Although I prefer the Fugees version personally

Extended version of Statues - Husker Du
Broken Chairs - Built to Spill
Sleepwalk - Tanya Donnelly
Too long in slavery - Culture

all the above and so so many more are just about perfect

I can't pick just one

I'm bizarely infatuated with 'the circle game' by joni mitchell at the mo :o

which reminds me of Hey Joni!, by Sonic Youth, which is incredible.

I'll stop now.

me too

I'd go for Waterfall rather than Fools Gold, though. Such a sweet song. :)

'Standing Here' everytime for me. Absolutely perfect.

Oh yes.

Jeff Buckley : Vancouver or Dream Brother
Elton (yup) : Someone saved my life tonight.
Arethra/Bacharach : Say a little prayer
and obviously
Don Henley : Boys of summer.

Just walk away Renee should be there as well but I don't think anyone's quite got it right yet. Waterloo sunset as well.

Damn I like some embarrasing music. Mind you, Elliot Smith did covers of the last two.

well your just wrong. and anyway i don't reckon a cover can be the best tune ever.

oh that's bollocks, dove!
the NIN version is utter, utter pants!
the johnny cash version is utterly heartbreaking!

I would echo the calls of Johnny Cash's "Hurt", and would also like to put up Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode", if only for that opening riff. Fuck me that thing is scintilating and also reminds of Marty McFly.

However I'll also nominate Missy Elliot's "Get UR Freak On", because I have never heard anything like it. Both her and Timbaland are total geniuses and they just stun you from every angle with that one.

Didn't know that but would love to know who the poem was by if you remember :)

something by siegfried sassoon, i believe. i don't think he wrote too much, so it should be easy enough to find which one...

edit - it may be this: 'before day'

Come in this hour to set my spirit free
When earth is no more mine though night goes out,
And stretching forth these arms I cannot be
Lord of winged sunrise and dim Arcady:
When fieldward boys far off with clack and shout
From orchards scare the birds in sudden rout,
Come, ere my heart grows cold and full of doubt,
In the still summer dawns that waken me.

When the first lark goes up to look for day
And morning glimmers out of dreams, come then
Out of the songless valleys, over grey
Wide misty lands to bring me on my way:
For I am lone, a dweller among men
Hungered for what my heart shall never say.

One of my favourites, it always gives me goosebumps when i hear it, its on BBC6 now.
Party Fears 2 by The Associates.
