A lot of people like him. I think he's an orientalising pig myself, but his books are very readable despite that and I've read most of them just because he goes to such interesting places and does some good research :)

Raban is fucking superb and that book, although truly excellent, still doesn't quite reach the genius of Hunting Mister Heartbreak - arguably one of the finest books ever written on America.

Suprised no one's mentioned Geoff Dyer either - excellent and bloody funny too.
