My favorite train journey.... hmmm....

I've never done the full length but it's hard to argue with the West highland Line

*an admission*

I should have said... best locomotive

*ejects self from Urban loco and loco-ologists group for the sharing of thermos flasks and discussion of livery, name plates and numbers - surrenders baby skin clad ceromonial copy of trainspotting for anarchists/socialists and other free thinking types - has matching pen and pencil wrestled from him by editor and team of sinister looking anorak clad heavies, all mutering, "idiot - a schoolboy error", and saying "your so shit, you can't even hang around with the train crew and everyone looks down on us - so what does that make you? eh? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha (evil laughter)"*

*I am wondering if Klu Klux Clanoracks would be an amusing name for a group of sinister hooded trainspotters. I think maybe it would be

curse you god for making me this way

Best locomotive anyone?

it wasn't a great train but it was a great journey, i didn't get much sleep :D

Westerns and Class 40s from the diesel era - in fact the 50s and 60s on British Railways was a weird and wonderful time for such things altogether. Got a soft spot for Black 5s and Stanier 8Fs when it comes to steam

My, this forum is really bringing out some unexpected enthusiasms in what I thought was an achingly urbane community

I think the HST (Intercity125) still has a certain presence as it sweeps on to the platform.

Better in the old BR Blue/Yellow livery though.

Bugger the TGV shot

Look at the classic old green SNCF freight loco on the hump in the background.......Heritage.

Personally I have a soft spot for Silverlinks 313120 "Parliament Hill" - which I caused to be named in 1996 on the reopening of the NLL at Hampstead Heath.

As had my dad got his way, my middle name would have been Stanier, I have to go for one of these - no fuss, absolutely functional design - stunning!

remember cycling down to penzance station with me mates to see the first HSTs come in. very exciting. was 7 at time though

just missed out on steam. first train memory is dad getting one of the western drivers to let me sit in the driver's seat at penzance

Well here's mine...

Sorry to be conventional, but they really are great trains. Much more spacious and airey than the Virgin Voyagers/Pendalinos.

*Repines for daily commute to uni* :(

Best work I've seen was a new class 59 restarting a 2000 tonne load on the Lickey incline 5 times. put all the BR types in the shade.

slow speed control - we'd never seen it before. I left the Regional Control in Crewe soon after.

Apparently its just the norm now
