Best Tom Waits Cover?

The Franks Wild Years Triology is his best stuff imo. I do love the early stuff too. Yeah it's pastiche - but I'm happy with that.

I have tried but just can't really get hooked on anything after that. I bought one of his recenter cds the other year. I have listened to it twice at most.

The Canadian songstress, Holly Cole, released a whole CD of Waits covers called Temptation. It's well worth a listen, though some songs are far better than others.

Me, I'm just sad that Sinatra didn't live long enough to cover Warm Beer and Cold Women. :)

Rod was a fantastic singer and then.... something happened in the mid-70s. I reckon it was aliens

it was her fault - that and buckets of cocaine i reckon....

John Kirkpatrick does a great version of that song about the whale and the bird. Just voice and accordion. I suspect it's probably not as good as the original though. I've never heard the original - does it have accordion on it?

It's a perfect Ramones song, isn't it? I was gobsmacked when I realised it was a cover.

I never knew that was a Waits tune either. Both versions are great, but it really is perfect for the Ramones and I think Joey sings it better tbh.

Just got my tom waits guitar chord book in the post this morning. It's got 80 odd songs in it. I am very happy :)

alright then.

I'm trying to start 'Goodbye 20th century' but I already dislike the guy writing it. fucking nerd. :D

he was pissed, deliberately trying to be obnoxious and didn't think it'd get printed.

Fucking dumb, and he deserved to be called on it, but I don't think it had any sincere racist intent - he was just trying to fuck off an interviewer.

Also part of that whole 'year zero' type thing that came with punk - he didn't want to be associated with music from the past, or america really. stupid stupid comment though.

the name was a bitter joke aimed at the american entertainment industry and he really really seriously considered dropping it when Presley died - I think Stiff records talked him out of it

Okay, I didn't know that. If Costello's music had been a little more revolutionary, I might have taken it a bit more seriously though. :hmm:

You'll like this then.
Before putting together his backing band The Attractions the band playing on his first album (my aim is true) were a country rock outfit called Clover who went on to become Huey Lewis and The News.

rock on!

who also toured with Thin Lizzy (i think it's Huey Lewis playing harmonica on Dancing In The Moonlight)

yeh, that freaked me out a bit when I heard about it. Neil Young on Motown :D

Heh.
He said he wanted to find out how they made those great records.
As far as he could tell, the got someone to stand behind you and sing over your shoulder REAL LOUD.

weren't The Fall nearly signed to Motown at some point? that always seemed an odd idea

anyway, back on topic like...

Tom Waits Covers

they're a mixed bag and no mistake

here, thought so, it was 'The Classical' that scuppered this genius plan surely almost the only way Motown could have been better would be to sign The Fall as well heh:D
