Tideland is Gilliams most recent film and readily available almost anywhere that stocks DVD's. It's an awful, ugly looking film IMO, Gilliams worst and most self indulgent by far and as irritating as an attention seeking child shrieking on top of their voice for two hours.
I can't disagree more. It's unsettleing, and leaves you rather dumbfounded, but it's a beautiful film, both visually and, I think, in spirit.

Jeliza-Rose's worldview is really appealing. (All MHO, of course.)

Of the others, I really love Crimson Royal Assurance for its central conceit.

Picked Brazil but was unsure. Don't really have a favourite. Tideland is by far his worst that I've seen.

I couldn't pick, so I asked myself "What would I watch right now?" and the answer was time bandits

I reckon there must be at least one in there womewhere. Probably at the greek king's court.

Never be precious about books when it comes to films. Films and books are different things.

The Shining for instance - quite good book. The Kubrick film is fantastic, but is not true to the film. Whereas the Stephen King film is true to the book and is utter shite.

oh yeah the King Shining is utterly awful

Torn between Time Bandits and Fisher King but went for Time Bandits for similar reasons to Crispy. It's on TV a lot and I always have to watch it and never, ever tire of it :D Maybe that's why I like it best though - because it's so familiar...

Haven't seen Tideland - do folks rate it? Must say, I haven't seen a film of his I have disliked so I'm not sure how I managed to miss it when it was at the cinema...

I watched Baron Munchausen on a sickie fairly recently and although it was good, it did drag a bit in places.

I loved Fear & Loathing too - captured the spirit of the book perfectly for me. "Backdoor beauty" indeed :D

Had to vote Brazil because I either haven't seen many of the others or I find I can only watch things like 12 Monkeys or Fear and Loathing a finite amount of times. But every time I see Brazil I can just sit back and immerse myself in it.

I love Terry Gilliam - his brilliant insanity and creativity - BUT...
It's funny when you list all the films like that, there's not one that works all the way through as a film (as an engaging story).
In my humble opinion, of course.

Fear and loathing has to be one of my fave films ever, watched it recently in a bit of a state and it goes a long way toward capturing the spirit of the book....

Whilst I rate most of his other stuff, I would like to note at this point that Jabberwocky is absolutely awful. I have tried watching it a few times and never got past about 10 minutes.

It is, however, entirely incoherent at all times in a way that the book is not.

...not sure I share that opinion, it seemed to emulate the sordid, descending into madness of a major binge quite coherently to me....

More of you guys need to vote Time Bandits. Those of you that haven't are wrong wrong wrong.

I must have FRUIT!

How long have you been a robber?
Four foot six.
Four foot six! My that is a long time. Jolly good!

Not that I can really pick, but if you absolutely forced me in a lose-both-eyes-and-inhale-a-turd-if-you-don't-choose kind of way, I'd go with Time Bandits.

Reasons? It was the first film of his I saw, as a kid, when I had no idea who he was and was just completely absorbed by this fantastically bleak idea of what it's like to be a kid; it's still piss funny every time I watch (their rendition of 'Me and my shadow' for Napoleon makes me laugh till I feel sick); the imagery and randomness is really evocative for me; it was my first introduction to the greatness of David Warner....

Ah, there's loads of reasons. I'll always have time for a Gilliam film, and it was a close run thing between TB and Brazil, which completely blew my prepubescent mind on first viewing...but it's gotta be Time Bandits ftw.

Gotta agree with flashman - ^ - I love almost all of Gilliam's films, even Tidelands (which for all it's beauty is very self-indulgent), but Brazil is his masterpiece.

"There you are, your own number on your very own door. And behind that door, your very own office! Welcome to the team, DZ-015"

Brazil - but Time Bandits is a close second.

Both very underrated IMHO.

Fisher King is probably my least favourite. Gilliam is best at mad vision, untrammeled imagination, dark fantasy and black humour. Fisher King has very little of this and has a major Robin Williams tax and a lot of schlock in it.

Fear Loathing is alrightish I s'pose - but its a lot like being stuck in a room with a couple of poeple completely off their tits manically losing it, something I dont realy need to go to the cinema to experience.

So hard to choose.

I think due to the constant repeated viewings and the near perfect adapation of a book that seemed fairly impossible to adapt, I'm plumping for Fear and Loathing.

Would've been great to had seen how he would've handled The Man Who Killed Don Quixote though. :(
