Best Stephen King story adaptation into film/TV

was there not a tommyknockers film

Unfortunately yes.

It had the same problem as i have with lots of Stephen King tbh, he starts well, sets up a good story, gets the atmosphere just right and then tends to wrap things up in a fairly rubbish way.

IT was definately the worst for this, but there are loads.

I've seen The Stand a zillion times - read the book twice - and while it's far from a cinema masterpiece I do love it. Rob Lowe is also in it - he plays the deaf/mute Nick Andross. Unfortunately though the guy who plays Randall Flagg is nothing near scary.

I really like the beginning of the film - Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper features over the opening scene.

The Stand is one of my all time fav books and like you say - the adaptation is not great but I always loved it - keep meaning to watch it again.

Not sure why people rate The Stand so much.
King's best work is when he's writing about himself and his craft, however thinly disguised it is.
It's no coincidence that The Shining, Misery, The Dark Half, The Body etc have protagonists who are writers.
He's also written an excellent book about horror called Dance Macabre. My flatmate has read his On Writing and rates it.
He's also reading King's latest The Duma Key, which is about a writer who suffers a terrible road accident (which happened to King also)

I love Danse Macabre

I was also underwhelmed by The Stand. The first half is brilliant but once the two communities get set up it all turns to shit.

I read that recently. It wasn't bad, certainly better than most of the stuff he's written in the last decade or so. Not as good as his early stuff though.

Misery or the Shining.

The Shawshank Redemption's brilliantly devised plot is ruined by the corny one liners.

I mean "get busy living, or get busy dying" WTF??! :D

Shawshank Redemption.
Stand By Me
The Shining (even though I take on board Kings criticisms of the film)
Green Mile
Salems Lot-scared the pants off me when I first saw it.
IT is pretty good for a made for TV film.
The Dead Zone.

I saw it years ago, it's a bit b-movie ish, well very, but I really loved the novel approach to time travel it had...

It's rather well produced, isn't it? Clearly it's not a big budget affair, but it does a lot with its resources and a little creativity.

I'm currently watching King's Nightmares And Dreamscapes on DVD and, with one great exception, they are very poor. :(

2 films to avoid are "Needful Things" and "Hearts in Atlantis". I was particularly disappointed with the Hearts in Atlantis film as that's my favourite King book. Does anyone know if parts of it are biographical btw? The bit where the guy is a young college student seems to be written straight from the heart.
I really enjoyed The Stand as a read so I'll look up the film. Is there a TV series of that aswell as a film? I'm sure I read or heard that somewhere.
