A good thing, and it tied in with the whole 'girl power' thing as well - basically the song is saying to teenage girls who are giving it up that it's a positive and good thing to ask their partner to wear a condom and that it's an intelligent thing to do. Postive and empowering message.

OK, I got confused by your use of the word 'kids'... I was envisaging 7 year olds!

Yeah, I know what you mean... but it still made me cringe anyway. ;)

I think it was more when Geri left, they sacked Simon Fuller and got it into their heads they could write their own material. Not the first Pop group that's happened to in history either.

They fucked up by going all r'n'b with Holler. They were a pop group and got above their station.

nah they'd just lived their natural life i reckon....and so what if "holler" was r'n'b? as mentioned on this thread, and also in my local when it came out all them years ago, "say you'll be there" was pretty much a g-funk tune. just cos something is "pop" doesn't mean it can't be rnb, dance, hip-hop, rock, whatever...pop is generally derivative anyway.

and besides, geri had already left - bands like that don't stay together much longer once a key member goes. the fans lose intrest as do the remaining members themselves.

...that poxy Toploader tune from the Sainsbury ad...'We get it on most every night...'

Yeah, really wanted to hear that every fucking commercial break didn't I? Cunts.
That is one of my

most

hated

songs

ever
.

I nearly died after seeing them live - fact. (BTW it was free as part of the Campaign For A Living Wage 2001, and they were playing with several other bands. :D )

They also fucked up by endorsing Thatcher as having 'girl power' and comparing their 'girl power' struggle with Nelson Mandela's struggles in SA and long-term incarcerated... ...he took it incredibly gracefully, considering.

yes, i remmeber when geri said she'd vote tory... and they all left the country for a year to avoid the taxes too...still - great pop group :D

Yeah, but the Beatles did the tax thing too...

Yes, but there natural fan base were young girls who like bland, harmless pop music. If the Spice Girl's first or second single was a heavy metal number, do you think they would have been so popular?

no i don't. but heavy metal and rnb aren't exactly akin to each otehr are they? and if you hadn't noticed - which i'm sure you have cos it seems to be one of your pet hates - rnb appeals very much to young girls.

With respect they had writing credits for most of the stuff on the first album, and apparently that was more than simply being done to appease the rockists. From an independent source I read that whilst they worked with writers and producers, who incidently weren't all established in the industry, they contributed to the writing sessions, grabbing lines out of the air and suggesting the structure to showcase their respective personalities. This is different to what was normal at the time when in pop bands there was usually a songwriter, like Gary Barlow or Tony Mortimer, and the others just did as they were told. The Spice Girls were wholly different in that they were so individual and so made sure their personas were at the forefront.

Simon Fuller didn't write anything though did he? I thought all the songs were credited to Stannard/Rowe...with of course individual contributions of respective Spices.

How tacky the SGs and Take That looked back then, and what marvellous, colourful and vivacious pop groups they look now on the other side of a stagnant sea of Steps, Westlifes, Blues, A1s, Another Levels etc. etc. etc. eh...? :(

(Or maybe I was just more of a finnicky music snob in them days :o )

Steps, Westlifes, Blues, A1s, Another Levels etc. etc. etc. eh...?
Steps were OK just for their raw campness. The others were/are all shite but remember we do still have Girls Aloud, the Sugababes, Britney and JC Chasez.

sugababes r teh C:cool::cool:L

looking forward to their new album, if "push the button" is anything to go by it'll be wicked :)

The Spice Girls came out when I was ten... I own a Spice Girls movie... What can I say, I was ten. Although I never got into any of the boybands. Clearly Spice Up Your Life is their best single. :D

Where is the poll option for 'I would rather garrot myself to death with a rusty spike than vote for a Spice Girl song?;

No, I think GA have beaten them now, but whether they've beaten the Spices yet I'm not sure. They'll never have the full package outside of the music but the songs are probably better.

There is a certain amount of crossover between the two. "Round Round" and "In The Middle" could both easily be GA songs as they're from Xenomania and likewise "Sound Of The Underground" and "Hear Me Out" could be 'Babes songs. I like the pre-packaged sass of GA more though.

"pre-packaged sass"

Is that like a stool sample?

GA are not posh in the Keane sense at all. Working class girls as far as I know. Plus there's 5 of them and only 3 Sugababes so they would win a fight. Nicola looks like a fierce little warrior, barely ever smiling. She might take Keisha, Mutya and Heidi on her own.
