I don't know why people rate 3 as one of the best - it's level pegging with 5 cos of the plot contrivances

Really, the only thing I felt rang a bit untrue was the Brother Mouzone thing.

I did really like the 3rd series though, Stringer Bell was fucking excellent and the whole gangster/business man tension was brilliant.

The 5th series was all a bit too neat, it was very plot driven and I thought some of the actions of the characters arose more from a need to tie all the ends together rather than stemming organically from their nature.

Of course it being the last series it had to find closure in a way the other series could afford to overlook.

Fwiw, reading the reactions over a period on here and elsewhere, I think the biggest problem for S5 is the Big Idea is too well disguised, or maybe people expect to see it manifest more conventionally.

What Big Idea?

It's just all a bit too neat and plot driven, more like a movie than the previous episodes in which things developed much more organically and never had that same level of neat interaction.

This is a like the red herring idea a coupe of pages ago, what you describe isn't David Simon, is it?

He's better than that and we know that because of the previous 50 hours. S5 isn't a step back, it's a step up.

boring attempt at troll. You got yer arse whipped when you tried to argue that before, and you'll have it whipped again if you make another such effort.

What happened was I got shouted down by the local cadre of true believers, but my opinion is borne out if one looks at the public at large, beyond the confines of the pc subset of some U75ers. :)

p.s. it's not a troll, it's my honest opinion of that show. I thought it was an insult.

look beyond it to baltimor cits who have a hard time believing Stringer is an englishman, at snoop being a genuine ex baltimore gangster, the writers having respectively spent many years in the crime and politics of baltimore etc.

You watched solely to troll, admit it.

Series 3 [...] Cutty was cool.

My favourite performance in the whole thing - all in the eyes!

deja vu again.
I think S2
No, I hated S2, it's S3
Yeah, S2 is shit, S1 or 3, etc for a few pages.

I think 2 is one that splits a lot of people.

For me it had some of the worst moments of the whole show in it - Ziggy was a character that didnt work for me, and there were a few unbelievable (i.e. i didnt believe them) performances throughout (the Greek, plus entourage, especially). Of the whole show it felt the most like TV.

That said it was a brave attempt at something I havent seen on US TV before, and a bold move after series one. It was far from being my favourite, but I rate them for trying it.

the Avon/Stinger/Omar/Brother set up in 3 would make Shakespeare sit up and take notes.
definitely - though scenes like Omar meeting Brother in the alley do move the show into Spaghetti Western territory. (Omar's whistling bugs me on that score too...)

One classy bit of writing in 3 is when Avon dissapears for a while and then gets shot in the drive by - the way the writers had a character go off and do his own thing away from the main storyline, and out of sight of the audience is something ive never seen before.

Normally, you get spoon fed everything thats happening on all sides of the fence - here Avon is on a mission and just fucks off from the narrative to do - the first we know about it is when gets caught out in that drive by. I was impressed anyway!
