best rum?

image.jpeg

It goes off really fast but it's the best tasting in my experience.

Voley has the correct response - Chairman's Reserve. Easily my favourite. Good old cheap as chips Bounty rum is nice for a session but it's a thinner, less interesting taste

Angostura 1824 is lovely and rich - I like a nice Trini rum.

If you want something cleaner tasting, less molasses-y try one in the Martinique rums made with cane juice - Trois Rivieres make some nice rum agricole. Or the lovely Clement rums - a bit richer and slightly darker.

I will also slum it with a bottle of Appletons Estate 12 year old if I have to. I've had the 21year old stuff and the whisky taste from the bourbon barrels is too strong for me - I like rum to taste of rum.

Basically I just like rum:oops:

For a change, it's good to pick up one of the French rhum agricoles from Guadeloupe, Martinique, and the like. They're mostly whites, because it's actually made from mashed up cane rather than molasses like most rums are. (There are darker ones, but it's from the barrel rather than the source material) Smells and tastes of sugar cane. Not necessarily a good thing in a cocktail or whatnot because it tastes very different to what you might expect, but lovely in and of itself. The Mrs likes this one: Trois Rivieres.
Same general idea as cachaca.

I can't really comment more than "it's different", because I can't really take rum. :(

Just been checking current US prices for One Barrel. $23.00 ! I doubt you'd pay anything like that in Belize but the days of 3US or 6 Belize dollars getting you a bottle look long gone. :(

Diplomatica Reserva Exclusiva.

I can't think of anything in its price range (£35 to £40) that's better.

Cockspur or Mount Gay are decent budget buys for the likes of me - where an open bottle is an empty one.

Can’t stand that spiced stuff though (of whatever stripe)
Yes a nice Bajan gold rum floats my boat & my budget too. I used to have a Cockspur t-shirt with a Cockspur cock & "The Bionic Cock that Spurs you on" printed underneath.

Bumping this cos I just got a bottle of diplomatico reserva. It's good but a bit sweet for my tastes.

Agree the older Havana Clubs are nice but the prices are eyewatering. There's definitely better value out there (though seleccion de maestros is great, just slightly overpriced).

El Dorado 12 comes highly rated and a good price for a 12 year old. Think that might be my next bottle.

I've recently discovered this. I can't find it except in one bar in La Herradura on the Costa Tropical. It is amazingly good. The bar owner knows I like rum and occasionally gets in something different for me. I must find a bottle to buy.

Ooh Rum

I drink it every week on a Friday, usually a cpl/few 25ml shooters sipped (on special occasions like Carnival we push things a bit further), and am in a position to be able to and have been buying and trying all sorts over lockdown.

My current favs are the Appleton Estate 21 (missus thinks it’s too harsh) at # 2 and the Flor de Cana 25 at # 1. Neither are cheap (both over a 1er) but as a Rum fan these 2 wipe the floor, personally, with all others.

The one I want to try/buy is the El Dorado 25 but it’s £500+ for a bottle, we have the 12 and 21 which are both divine but the 25 is meant to be on another level.

Diplomatico’s and Ron Zacapa’s (even the 23) etc. are shite and well overrated (for different reasons) IMO.

We’ve had an interesting Indonesian number (Batavia Arrack) this summer, made using coconut flowers/molasses. I bought it as wanted to test the boundaries of what Rum traditionally is seen as.
