Best roots / reggae / dub / dancehall artist

Talking of festivals, the first band I remember watching was at Notting Hill Carnival in the early 80s. I had gone with my Mum but lost her and ended up wandering around on my own. After a while I noticed a crowd waiting in front of stage waiting for someone to come on so decided to take a look.

Out walk Aswad announcing 'This is Live & Direct...'

25 years later I'm still listening to the album.

ps I did find Mum after the gig quite easily, no chance of that these days. :D

Just a few of my favourites.
The Ethiopians

Baba Brooks

Now that would be a festival line-up!!!

Wouldn't it! One Eyed Giant by Baba Brooks never fails to get me dancing. Same for Liquidator by Harry J Allstars and Feel Like Jumping by Marcia Griffiths. Just can't help dancing.

funny, a lot of people i've come across over the years, who are into reggae, kind of diss Aswad as pop-py and irrelevant. i don't agree. i've got a tape of a place i was at - and the dubversion of 'Gimme the Dub' is played with toasters, and the place is gone wild - those who don't know it, check it out. even old rootsy rastas were stepping on the floor. :D

that Warrior Charge record was massive too - and at the time, really fast. which is funny now, cos it seems really slow. and irrc, Brinsley Forde was the first British reggae pin-up (boy was he cute, shame he's a bit of a twat now...) on the back of the film Babylon probably. good film if you haven't seen it firks.

anyway, i rate Aswad. not all of their stuff admitedly but they made their mark imo. :)

heh, Alton Ellis - i knew him in the 90s without knowing it was him. i had quite a few lively chats over drink and spliffs in a friend of a friend's kitchen in wembley. i never realised it was him until the friend told me last year....a typical foo scenario :D :o

edit: that was wierd actually cos his Willow Tree will always be in my top 20 favourite reggae songs - and i never got to tell him. daft innit. it means a lot to me, that song.

Girl i've got a date and dancecrasher are two of my favoruite tracks ever.

yep, they're lovely too. :):)

i'm doing the Alton Ellis thing now. i think he has one of the sweetest voices. :) Willow Tree makes me cry. and i'm not easily moved to tears...

i love Dennis Brown too. and Gregory Isaacs. he fell out of a community centre in Cambridge once :D

i agree with Jefe (i think) too, about Johnny Obsourne's voice. Truths and Rights is as perfect an album as you can get imo.

He's playing some festival in Bedfordshire in August I think.

he must be an old man now, he was old enough back then :D

a lot of them were still really going strong in the 90s in Europe apparently. i do remember that this friend of a friend was a (mental) italian london woman who oragnised reggae gigs, festivals all over Europe. they were doing really well. dunno if it's still like that. anyway, that must've been why Alton Ellis was in the woman's kitchen in wembley.....who knew? i just thought he was a nice sharp old man :o we talked about music and i do remember he was really funny. :)
