Best roots / reggae / dub / dancehall artist

Finley Quaye's not really reggae though, the odd tune maybe, but it's all over the shop stylistically..

Chaka Demus & Pliers are ace

Wow lovely thread! Searched out half a dozen tunes from here already they've right perked me up this morning! ;)

Erm ... Christel and the Goldmaster Allstars! :D

Keep it coming!

Can you recommend any specific tunes Pavlik? :D

my favourite albums from culture are two sevens clash and harder than the rest
and dread in a babylon and version galore from uroy.

also pretty much anything from lee perry/the upsetters.

where's herbsman when you need him? he knows some good tunes

crustychick loves her ska too

bah!

I think the problem is that a lot of people own 'ska' compilations that contain all the obvious 2 Tone stuff, but also tracks like Liquidator, Skinhead Moonstomp, Return of Django etc. It's the compilers who are lazy rather than the casual listener, who probably assumes that 'ska' is an all-encompassing term for Jamaican music from the mid-1960s to early 1970s (and the late 1970s revival), rather than a distinct musical style.

Which then gets you, if you're on about compilations of music pre 1972/3 into the whole ska/rocksteady/skinhead reggae debate./ Not to mention if there is such a definable genre as 'skinhead reggae'...... Now where's my anorak......

Christ on a bike, 3 pages of favourite artists and nobody's mentioned the greatest Jamaican singer ever?

It Dennis Emmanuel Brown

I do a reggae show every Wednesday 6:30 - 8pm on Purple Radio, tune in and have a listen. Ken Boothe's Is It Because I'm Black is in the pile for tonight's show.

not one of my favourites but a mate, front cover of skinhead bible, is a f'kin' HUGE Dennis Brown fan.

I might tune in tonight if a decent amount of ska/rocksteady is lined up.

I mainly play roots, but occasionally do a ska/rocksteady special, or a section of Studio 1 or Treasure Isle.

That's exactly what I mean. I picked three very obvious examples of tracks commonly mistaken as ska, but there are plenty more.

I think skinhead reggae can be defined as a genre in its own right. Then there's another debate about the tracks specifically aimed at skinheads, which a lot of purists wouldn't consider real skinhead reggae.

I would agree that skinhead reeggae is a genre and yeah the definition changes depending on who yer talking to.

Fuck, I only just saw this. I'd have given it a listen.

Not keen on Dennis I have to say :o

am a skinny white geordie, wtf has that gotta do with listening to it?

Oh nothing, just meant that I'm not really into this Dancehall Jamaican scene, living on the Wirral and stuff :D. I don't suppose its important, I'm sure there are plenty of white northern Dancehall afficionados!

Not that you can't appreciate it as much or nothing.... be cool dudes.

Not usually a poster but kinda my thing. Delroy Wilson's early tunes are good - Have Some Mercy, I'm In a Dancing Mood, I Want Justice, I'm Not A King. Barrington Levy might have been spoiled by constant jungle/dnb samples but has a great voice. Sugar Minott's cool 'Oh Mr DC' 'Rough Ole Life' 'Sufferers Choice'. Tenor Saw's probably my favourite though, especially 'Roll Call' and 'Lots Of Sign'.
