best rock\metal vocalist ever?

Bah, half these people are either dead or way past their prime...

What about OUR generation? (OK, mine - I'm "only" 40!)

I'm voting Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad / Devin Townsend Project). Incredible tenor / contralto, plus when he screams he can do that in tune and no matter how he shreds his throat you can still hear every word clearly. I'd love to have a voice like that .. plus, he has a sense of humour about it all, which in the pompous, self-regarding world of Metal (or even Rock music in general, actually) is always a breath of fresh air.

Otherwise, there's always Mikhael Akerfeldt, from Opeth. Again, great tenor and epic roars, very often in the same song - and he carries it off just as well live as on record (though the last album had no roars and it seems like he's trying to do less of that as time goes on)

For the women, I'd say Masha Scream from Arkona. Again, a really powerful "folky" voice, and she may have the most epic roar I've ever heard from a woman. Shame she only sings in Russian, because I don't speak it.

I don't hold with this the greatest whatevers. Depends on what genre, what you want from a vocalist... Jesus I'm boring myself. Alright anyway. What about Bruce Dickenson?
Phil Anselmo another one with great range. Though restricted that on most of Pantera's albums.
Chris Cornell has a distintive voice.

Too many to chose just one.... but the guy from opeth voice is absolute dreams...

Also Rob Flynn from Machine Head circa burn my eyes
Max Cavalera always
Al from ministry esp singing Lay Lady Lay
And Burton C Bell Soul of a new machine to Demanufacture.

Awww i miss those days

I don't know about "ever" but I will say this, Dave Hunt from Anaal Nathrakh is one seriously twisted vocalist.

He does every vocal on this song .. and you have to hear it on headphones to hear all the vocals buried in there. I don't know about 'greatest' but original and versatile, definitely.

[edit - change song!]

Actually I fucking dare one of you guys to use 'fancy a night of satin sheet action?' as a chat up line next time you're out. I'd fucking piss myself laughing if someone said that to me!

Does he really say 'if you would change your mind we could find a night of satin sheet action' at 1.25?!:eek:

Actually that's so cheesy he's almost my kind of a guy! :D

I've used worse.

'Hi, my name's Bond..?'

'James Bond?'

'No, Unibond. Would you like me to fill your crack?'
