best restaurant in london..

Oxo has a great view, and the food was great the one time I went there.
Wasn't impressed by L'Escargot, but then again I went on the worst possible night of the year.
I'd lurrrve to go the Fat Duck!

But the one thing I'd love to do again, can't be done...

...Max Renzland has quit 'cheffing'. :(

I remember when he started up in my local greasy spoon, on a non-descript side street in Hampton Wick. By day it was still the caff, full of contractors with cooked breakfasts and 'builders teas'. By evening, Max & his brother transformed it. Suddenly there were all these flash cars parked outside every evening. I had no idea what was going on, but eventually I had to give it a go, and booked me and the then GF in, about a month in advance, which was as soon as we could get. It was bloody amazing. There we were all bumping elbows, perched in front of the tiny tables and checked cloths, whilst the Renzlands were whipping up the most incredible things in a "Caff" kitchen. Best dining experience ever. Really felt like you'd stumbled across a little secret.

go to the river cafe, its both great and i can get you it well cheap with the best service one of my best mates is the sous chef.

Apparently I took someone to Ramsey's at RHR once (I used to be rich.) I say 'apparently' because I don't remember it at all. I'm not saying it was unmemorable. Perhaps it's one of the memories erased when I fell off my bike and bashed my head in.

Sorry, I'm not being much help here, am !?

Of the ones i've been to:

Rhodes 24
Yautcha
Benares

Thought Nobu was shite, crap service, average food. Hakkasan was okay but apart from the Black Miso Cod the menu was pretty uninspired.

Yautcha is really not all that great... sorry. It's food doesn't impress much, the service is ok and while the place looks great - plenty of other places are better in their own ways.

Oxo Towers is good of course. Great view, but a bit noisy and better for business lunches. Posh dishes in small portions.
Great view, but unremarkable overpriced grub and shite service.

Best food and service I've ever had was at Bibendum, South Ken. Pricey but worth it.

Fab location, but DONT TOUCH THIS PLACE OUT OF SEASON!!!

I had 'grouse' their once and cutting it (with a sharp knife) was like cutting into a rugby ball. With no vegetables. Absolutely awful (and i still cant believe the PR who organised this didnt check whether people ate game). Out of about 15 of us no one could cut it to start, and when someone finally succeeded, their grouse went shooting across the table (which was facking hilarious!).:D:D

I was eating there when you were still at school, baby.

best one i've been to is either fredericks, in upper street,Islington or the almeida (opp the almeida theatre in upper street)

You can't get grouse out of season.

Enjoyed the Roof Gardens in Kensington for a couple of meals, would never go full price but regularly get good deals from Top Table.

Best restaurant has got to be The Landau in W1.

The surroundings, the architecture, the attention to detail, the service, the wine, the food - all in package.

The Clos Maggoire is also a great bet.
It really is the most intimate I experienced.

For budget - I'd choose a Chinese cafe - PT Diner opposite Gerard Street (they do an amazing chicken/jellyfish dish) or Song Que on Kingsland Road. Can have a very decent dinner for two for under £30 there.

Hakkasan's unashamedly designed and a bit poncey. I really wanted to dislike the coolness of the place but I'll admit I was less than secretly impressed. Especially as the food's been exceptional on the handful of visits there.

I must admit I expected to find Hakkasan horribly pretentious when an old friend took me for dinner there last summer, but actually I really enjoyed it and the food was exceptional, to say nothing of the cocktails. I was quite glad he was paying the bill, though!

another vote for st john's. The spitalfields one it is possible to eat for under a tenner, if you get the right starter, a glass of wine, and lots of their lovely bread.
