The Devil as he appears to Ivan in the Brothers Karamazov is also a wonderfully witty character.

Yes indeed. There's also the Grand Inquisitor who isn't a million miles away from a satanic figure, and who is also portrayed to the reader via Ivan's perception of him.

Elsewhere in Dostoevsky there's the marvellously evil Pyotr Verkhovensky in 'The Devils' (title a bit of a hint there). He's one of my favourite demonic figures because of the charming way he insinuates himself with the greedy, foolish and vain middle classes without ever actually hiding his obsession with gaining power from death, destruction and chaos. Not unlike Bulgakov's Woland, he also buggers off at the end and leaves everyone else to deal with the massive shitstorm he's left behind.

can people please provide a brief summary of why they like their devils please.

I'm not very well read and I would like to intend to read some of these books

The devil is given a reprieve by God, to live one month in the body of a man. Then, should he be good, he can rejoin heaven. Obviously he just goes on a huge sybaritic bender. Very very funny indeed. Theres a film of it that I've not seen

That sounds excellent

why don't they make more films like this?

Didn't the demon who possessed the child on The Exorcist claim to be the Devil himself?

If so, it gets my vote. Simply because of "your mother sucks cocks in Hell" line :D
