Not when it breaks down in some god forsaken not-even-a-village for an hour where there isn't even a vending machine! I mean, who the fuck ever uses that station?!

but the scenery is stunning...even if the trains are crap

Bridge over the falls, stonking, plus you know you're on your way to Hampi, so its all good

It was hysterically funny. There was a coachful of European backpackers - many of them almost twenty years my junior - all in awe as I was the only person who knew exactly when to stroll down to the carriage door to get a good photo of Dudhsagar. My only advantage was that I'd read both the Footprint and Rough Guides rather than the wildly inaccurate "Lonely Planet" that they were all clutching in English, French and German editions.

I made a point of getting an auto-rickshaw and doing the Hampi temples in reverse order the next day, just to keep up my illusion of being an "old India hand" as I encountered them all on the way downhill the next day. ;)

Konkan Railway Dardar to Pernem kept wanting to get off and have a look around, seems they now do such stopping tickets, plus you get to leave from VT/ CST so MUCH easier

Think there are still only two (heavily booked) trains a day to Madgaon from what I still think of as Victoria Terminus. Most other Konkan services still involve the trek out to whatever Kurla has been renamed as (Lokmanya Tilak Terminus?)

Yarmouth sea front circa 1970.Unusual rolling stock,a carriage to myself, duel control and a convenient circular track.Sadly obsolete now.
