best pub in brixton that isn't the albert

What are the two pubs on Lynham Road (by Crescent Road and the mini supermarket at the back of the estates behind the Windmil) like?

The Duke of Cornwall used to be a wonderful old man's pub. Very few people in the lounge, juke box going back to the 60's (5 plays for 50p), beer for £1.60/pints (Ansell's), log fire in the grate and really friendly landlady.

But then it changed hands......last I was in it looked like it was being 'let go' :(

i'm sure this thread has been up before but since we're on the subject i'll say it totally depends on my budget. if i can afford it, it would be the sw9 bar or the satay bar for their cocktails! wetherspoons is good price wise but i have got beef with them as they would not allow mw to sit in there with my 3 month old baby. i mean fair enough it hasn't got a beer gargen but this was during the day i went for something to eat and i was in the non-smoking section. aside from the albert the most accommodating places for me + my daughter has to be the satay bar + the hobgoblin. :D

OK, let me redefine my question.

Apart from the Albert, the Effra, the Hobgoblin, the Beehive, and the Trinity...where do you rate?

I'm more interested in places like the Sultan.

What are the two pubs on Lyham Road (by Crescent Lane and the mini supermarket at the back of the estates behind the Windmil) like?

More local boozers please!

one of the pubs on Lyham has been closed for a while (the one nearest the prison)
oh..The Hand In Hand ain't that great; not much atmosphere

The Springfield

I drank in there in the final days. One night we went in they had nothing but cans of Fosters!

The passing of that place really annoyed me because in my view it failed because of lazy management and not falling custom.

Some saturday afternoons used be a great craic in there. All the old boys with their betting slip and then watch "Stars in their Eyes" before heading home!

I like the Beehive (no, honest) as an unfussy, unpretentious place that serves good ales.

I agree completely. In fact the Beehive is excellent! Be wary of those who slate it...

I also like that one on Kellet Road - the Effra? - it has real character and is welcoming.

I don't really know that many others despite being here several years...gonna make a conscientious effort to change that!

LOL - It's true IS, I do prefer jazz to drum'n'bass or jungle, even the modern variety (though natch I prefer trad).

Boo-be-doo-be-dooooo.......

Fank Gawd, thought I was the only one with any taste.

You people are just obsessed with pubs. I havent actually been in one for nearly a year now, but the last one I drank in was the Albert. I had to leave because it was so smokey.

Yup, the smoke in the Albert is a problem for those of us with pure lungs! Whenever I'm in there I'm reminded of Peggy Lee -- "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and all that.....

The Prince Regent on Dulwich Rd has a good pub quiz. The Effra is good especially on jazz nights (now I don't live opposite it) and the Trinity Arms is OK if it's not too rugger buggery.

You forgot to advertise the excellent al fresco drinking available in Tate Gardens, established deliberately by Lambeth Council to remind their citizens of sleepy Tuscan afternoons.

Yupps regularly park up the Porsche in Rushcroft Road and carry a Fortnum’s picnic hamper and chilled Bolly over to the benches by the fountain.

Then wander, hand in hand, down to the Barrier Block -checking out the window desplays in the famous Coldharbour Lane Boutiques - for a hilarious game of Frisbee on that patch of grass by the Esso garage where, more often than not, a string quartet is playing, or even a small chamber orchestra performing Bach on authentic instruments.

And then, feeling rather peckish, the Yupps may retire to the Beehive for a "Two Meals for £5.75 Special."

Brixton is truly Yuppie Heaven!

LOL@ a mischievous Anna Key!

HATE Living - not just for their past racist practices and the owner's dodginess.

Not to mention their "security" and its novel use of gravity as an expeditious method of removing tarrying punters from the upstairs area.

I've NEVER seen the Hand in Hand busy.

What's happened to that pub that was either on Lyham or Dumbarton. Coach and Horses or something?

Beehive is the best pub in Brixton in my opinion.

The more you go in the better it gets too.
You mean the longer you stay in there, the better it gets. ;)

Anyway, aren't you supposed to be going somewhere today, Mr R? ;)

Although the Effra's my closest pub and a beautiful building, I must admit that the Jazz puts me off visiting a fair deal of the time. There's undoubtedly some talent playing down there, but I seem to have bad luck - everytime I visit and I seem to end up parked next to some Kenny G lookalike parping away furiously at top volume. And there's never much room to escape to...

Maybe I've had bad luck, but it's fair to say that I tend to prefer the Effra in daytime or when they have reggae playing.

There is a pub near the Coldharbour end of Ruskin Park which I think is called the Cambria. The last time i was in there is seemed pretty run down and a bit shabby. A pity because it is a fine building and has great potential I think.

It's been gentrified!! :p :p It's all blond wood and rocket paninis these days. Has been for quite a while. You'd better get up there and check it out, eh? :p

Mr Retro -- I bet you are. ;)

Guess what Mr Retro is doing on Saturday!!

Gwaaan! Tell 'em!

Blummin Emma, Anna - which side are you on?!

That's a more convincing satire of ungentrified Brixton than even I could muster ;)
Another local venue, much loved by Brixton "new money," is the Goose (opposite the Beehive).

- candles and flowers on every table

- "slim and attractive" staff recruited from the better English private schools

- top "gastopub" menu: starters from £12.50, main courses from £22)

- free roquette-scented "wet-wipes"

- signed Jamie Oliver portraits on the walls..... "Pucka!"

Warning: a dress code is in operation at the Goose

Gentleman Yupps: Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater thown nonchalantly over the shoulders

Lady Yupps: "difficult" glasses, e.g.

my tops are

the trinity arms
pullens (wine bar in herne hill)
the effra
then the albert

in the eastend the bricklayers arms

Anna - could you please put a sock in it. That's my favourite pub. Are you trying to drive me out but setting it up to be overcome with yuppies?

It's the classiest place in Brixton and I'd like it to stay that way

Doesn't seem like it. Quite run down in fact. Bit of a dump to be honest. Could to with a good tidy up.

My mate Tarquin - a Goose regular - with his runabout "Talullah" (named after an ex-flame! Golly was she fast!! Good looking filly too!!).

Tarquin and I were at Winchester together. Gosh did we get up to some japes!!!

Tarquin now lives in Brixton, having purchased former social housing with his "Golden Hullo" from CityBank (where he's a big noise in Futures)!!!

Then you are either mightily fussy, 'lulah, or the pub you are thinking of is not, in fact, the Cambria.

Unless it has gone massively downhill since I was last in there with Mrs Magpie. Er, come to think or it, me being in there with Mrs Magpie and it then going massively downhill is not beyond the realms of imagination in terms of cause and effect. ;)

Mind you, it was about two years ago now. My, how time flies when one is permanently pissed. ;) I shall have to go up there and see if the locals have indeed degentrified it.
