Pele was great, but he was surrounded by great players, never tried cutting it in Europe either.

True on the second point, but it can very much be argued that incorporating yourself into a team with other great individuals (Vava, Nilton Santos, Garrincha, Gerson, Jairzinho, etc) is a great skill in itself.

However, I don't think I can judge from the list, simply because the only game pre-1990-ish that I've seen in full is the 1966 WC Final (the Beeb showed this just before Euro96). Thus of the cannonised list, I've seen Banks, Moore, Charlton and Beckenbauer.

This would be my dream XI based on those I've seen in real time;
Buffon
Thuram Costacurta Baresi Maldini
Figo Desailly Pirlo Giggs
Baggio Batistuta

Of those, I'd pick Maldini as the best, but all eleven have been beautiful to watch.

I thought you were Scottish (going on your England thread comments) and therefore would be a huge Maradonna fan.

I'm confused now. :hmm:

I am fortunate enough to be Welsh, and scoring twice (once) against England is hardly enough to make up for the rest of his crimes against football, not the least of which was being an integral part of the to play in a world cup finals (1990, which was an especially good tournament for horrible, cynical sides).

I disqualified on acocunt of the only thing i have ever seen of him is that sick sick, sick run taking it past like 5 players and the keeper and then being a complete and utter cunt and wating on the line for the other defender rather then rolling the ball in.

What a tool:mad:. Ronaldo or messi would be shot if he did that and rightly so.

oh garrincha without a doubt

there are only about 2 games he played in available to watch ever and you'd have to be about 65 to have seen him play....

Paul McGrath was the best defender.

Probably Pele or Maradona for the overall, although I loved Zidane.

Fav out of the list is Zico

This old man says.

Yashin
Thuram, Kolo Toure, Baresi, Facchetti
Garrincha, Blanchflower, Beckenbauer, Best
Eusebio, Pele

A team that would beat any other 11 players ever.

I'm glad someone else remembers Lev Yashin, "The Black Panther." He was a great goalie (but so was Gordon Banks before he lost that eye).

I'd tip Pele for the best, closely followed by George Best and then Zidane though I wouldn't argue with anyone who put Best top. Best at the top of his powers had to be seen to be believed, for the sheer range of his skills and the number of different ways he could score (he could also tackle like a full back). As far as I know there isn't a player in the Premiership now within a mile of him.

Did anyone watch football in the nineties. Cantona wasn't even that close to being the best in the World in his own time, let alone best ever.

Zinedane Zidane for me. Though with honourable mentions for Best, Gascoigne and Le Tissier. (honourable mentions for Gascoigne and Le Tissier because neither of them acheive enough to lay claim to this title, but whatever I like most about football Zidane, Best, Gascoigne and Le Tissier sum it up the best)

Grown-ups have these things called "books."

Anyway, you can have a look at Garrincha on YouTube. He perfected the so-called "Cruyff Move" ten years before JC.
