Best place to eat currently in Brixton

Gyoza is good. The dish which I liked was a mixture of egg-fried rice and seafood.

The toasted paninis in this sandwich bar near Herne Hill station are good

Some of the food in the wazzitcalled Cafe next to the Albert is good.

Sourbread (?) pizza place in Brixton market.

This was last year...:p

I don't think Gyoza's his sort of thing sadly. Nor is the cafe near The Albert.

The sourdough place (Franco Mancas) would be be my first choice but it's only open Mon-Sat 12-5 :(

I like Amazonica but last time I was there it was particularly authentic in its recreation of hot country by having an infestation of fruit flies... :(

(definitely don't order starters - you will not be able to eat your main!)

All this talk of Amazonica has made me arrange an outing for my son's girlfriend for when her exams are over. She's going to bring her Mum who I have never met....this means after two years the relationship is definitely serious! Hurrah! The best thing about my son is his girlfriend.

They are refurbishing the cinema and are doing up the downstairs bar area. The cafe is most certainly still open.

At the moment - that will change in the next couple of weeks, I reckon!

The Ritzy Cinema in Brixton undertakes some extensive
refurbishment including a brand new Café-Bar.

In early April 2009, an extensive programme of refurbishments will
begin at The Ritzy in Brixton. The work, which has been approved
by English Heritage and Lambeth Council, involves alterations to the
Box Office, Kiosk and Crush Bar areas as well as the first floor cafe.
Completion is anticipated by the end of July.
On the ground floor, the existing Crush Bar will make way for a new
combined Box Office and Kiosk with five service points
supplemented by two Automated Ticketing Machines. The existing
Box Office will be transformed into a new kitchen while the Kiosk
will become a bar, creating a ground floor catering operation with
breakfasts served from 7.30am and more substantial fare available
until 10pm. The new bar will also be able to serve to the outside
during the warmer months and will benefit from an extended menu
and free Wi-Fi.
The existing café operation will also be refurbished and remodeled
as a dedicated club event and conference space, with better
provisions for draught beer and soft drinks, as well as an increased
number of till points to speed up service.
The works will be phased to disrupt the operation of the cinema as
little as possible. Work will begin with the existing Crush Bar and
the creation of the new, expanded Box Office and Kiosk. Once this is
operational, the new kitchen and bar will be built, and when all the
work on the ground floor is complete, the final phase will begin in
the first floor café.
All 5 screens will be open during the refurbishments with the
exception of a few days when Screen 5 is being reseated. The first
floor café will remain open until the works on the ground floor are
complete.
Ritzy Manager Rob Belfield said: “Inevitably there will be some
inconvenience for our customers during the building period. Thank
you in advance to our customers for bearing with us while the works
happen. They are part of the continuing programme of
improvements, including some behind the scenes projects, which
we hope will make The Ritzy an ever more comfortable place to
visit.”

I've not been to The Gallery for ages I'm afraid and I can't remember what day we went. Amazonica is like a Colombian pueblo though with little tiled roofs over the tables.

Dad changed the arrangements and we ended up eating out in Kennington. So I still haven't made it to either The Gallery or Amazonica :(

This needs updating... any reviews of the delicious looking places in Granville arcade?

The little Italian place and the Islander's Kitchen (Filipino) are both good. I also like Federation Coffee for fabulous, er, coffee and cakes.

The Morroccan cafe next to Fed Coffee do some really good soups. Not sure about the rest of the food as I haven't tried it. the owner is friendly and welcoming.

For sandwiches there's a little place on Tulse Hill, on the block after the Hootananny, that does huge and fresh sandwiches (baguettes, ciabattas, etc) for £1.50. I don't know what it's called but it has a black exterior and there's just one guy working inside. Now that I'm skint, I can't beat it for lunch in the park.

Dinner:
-Fujiyama.
-Brazas.
-Asmara is not bad, but Adulis in Kennington is much better.

Lunch on a Saturday:
-The first cabin on the Brixton rec road that serves delicious Algerian food (their butter bean soup is superb!!) with loads of bread.
-The Jamaican place on Electric Avenue (I think it is called Healthy Eaters).

The place not far from McDonalds, on Acre Lane - Bambalous or something, can't remember the name. They do a nice curry goat and Guinness punch!

yeah bambalous i think.
Jerk lamb aint so bad.
curried goat was a bit iff.
rice and peas too dry.

I thought it was Bamboula - anyway, the food is fine but in my experience the service is baaaaaad - last time, there was a couple of tables of people who arrived early to eat before going to the Academy and had to leave before the food arrived.

Fair enough, that would be the last time I went if that happened to me. They've been good when I've been in there although, both times were during the afternoon and fairly quiet.

Is Amazonicas any good then? I saw someone earlier in the thread thought so - I'm planning on taking the missus there on Friday.

The food is big but nothing special in Amazonicas IME. good if you're very hungry or have hollow legs.

Amazonica's good. It's hardly fine dining, but if you like all things corn-based and gravitate towards generous portions you won't be disappointed. It's a good place to sample Colombian food ime. Really likeable and friendly staff/management as well

To be honest, I wouldn't expect pre-gig speedy service in any West Indian eatery, let alone Bamboulla. Like Negril, Bamboulla's an accessible and safe place to eat Caribbean food in a comfortable enough environment. There are better and cheaper West Indian eats all around locally, albeit mainly takeaways, but they're likeable enough places to sit down and unwind in.

I'll admit to being a little underwhelmed by El Panzon of late, portion control seemingly meaning that too many of the normal burritos lack distinct flavours, buried under too much rice and padding. But the deluxe burrito of pollo pibil really, really impressed me yesterday. Stacked with properly griddled slices of marinated meat, loads of fresh flavours to the fore and genuinely lovely all round - an exemplary example of a burrito that I'd be happy to eat anywhere in the world. . But at £10 a pop, that's hardly cheap street food any more. And you're basically eating in a noisy music-focused pub with toilets of dubious distinction.

St Francis is up for rent again by all accounts, the owners failing to make it work on their return

Agreed, enjoyed having El Panzon again in The Hootenany but the pub is (IMO) a bit shit so won't be running back.

Haver to try Amazonica's at some stage.
