Best place to eat currently in Brixton

Well I love Brazas - as everyone knows - but I'm going to stop banging on about it now because too many people have cottoned on and it's getting to the stage where without a reservation you're in danger of not getting a table..

I'd love to eat at The Gallery, if only for gaijinboy's sake, but it's not for vegetarians at all sadly.. :(

Do they do any vegetarian food at the Gallery? I've always wanted to see that back room, but assume it's all meat and fish...
There's a portuguese lentil and rice dish - amongst some basics such as omlettes - on the vegetarian page of the menu.

I'm really pleased to see the Satay Bar is mentioned in this thread. Just to give you a quick low down, I have been involved revamping the place for the past year. I remember what it was like when it first opened 12 years ago and felt over the past 4 years or so it got a bit wayward. Like a lot of people, I stopped going there.

I got involved with the place by just having a drink there one day and since then have been attempting to get the place back to its former glory.

So just to let you know what we have done, we have completely revamped the food which was the main emphasis of the place now. This has had a really positive knock on effect, and again the place has become something that is was initially intended to be, a welcoming place for Brixtonians and their friends, without the rude boy KFC massive element if you get what I mean.

I reduced the prices by 20% across the food menu and introduced lots of veggie options too (the Indonesian chef's eat mainly veggie as well and can do some great things with beancurd!)

If you would forgive me for the self promotion, I would like to let you know about the 3 offers we have going on at the moment. I've posted this just in case you haven't been there for a while and are curious, if not then no sweat - just ignore me.

Lunch as mentioned by someone else on this thread is £4.95, which includes a main dish and rice. The crispy snapper with rice is a complete bargain.

We also have an evening meal deal - Curry in a Hurry. Anyone going to the Ritzy can get a curry, rice and a bottled beer (not bear ;) )for £7.99 in the evenings - Sun-Tues (from memory, so days might be sligtly different).

and the last one is Satayday- which offers 2 extra Satay Sticks early Saturday evenings at the regular list price..

Takeaways get 10% discount across the board.

If any of you would like to pop your head in please email me studio120 at btinternet dot com and I would be very happy to offer a 10% discount, I can't combine this with the above meal deals though. Just let me know the name you would like to book under and the date and time. I can run this offer from 20th October to 31st October.

Thanks again for mentioning the place.
Cheers

I finally made it to Franco Mancas and the food was really excellent.

What wasn't so good were the braying poshos who ignored the fact there was a queue and tried to push in
Most irritating.

But the food was fantastic so that sort of made up for it. Sort of :hmm:

Is it open on Sundays then?

Just wanted to add that I made it down there again yesterday lunchtime as I wasn't working and an old mate was in town. It was busy but no braying poshos and it was just fantastic all round. Nom nom nom.

Surely you'd choose/want to eat free range chicken because it's simply more ethical?

i don't moralise foods.

if i was to be ethical, i'd give up meat.
there's nothing ethical about murdering animals for food - especially when the human body can happily live without flesh.

Aye, but there's a difference between making a choice to eat meat and supporting a system that sees thousands of beakless birds shovelled into shit-filled sheds.

I've no problem with eating meat - hell I've killed chicken from 'primitive' pens before eating them the same day - but I'd rather not treat animals so terribly if I can avoid it.

yes i killed, drained and prepared animals like that also.
it was educational and you learn to value the flesh you eat.

ethical meat eating is a marketable ploy imo.
like ethical murder. just turn your back to the whole industry is the best way to show support to the ill treatment of animals.

Bollocks. Killing animals and improving their welfare when alive are not exclusive aims.

People do want to detach themselves from the reality of the industry though - cheap chicken the cruellest and worst offender, with tasteless vein-free chicken breasts remaining the most popular cut - go figure.

I don't eat meat myself. But I accept that others do and that that's not likely to change anytime soon. I'd rather that they went for free range rather than battery farmed chicken. It's clearly a 'better' option even if both routes end up with a dead chicken. At least the free-range chicken had some kind of life before it met it's maker. Battery farming is disgustingly cruel.

i'm far removed from the ethics.
still can't get my head around the logic of murdering an animal for the flesh you don't really need - and then differentiating what is ethical or not.
i don't even understand the point of a vegetarian when you can be a vegan.
it's 100% or nothing - none of this half-hearted bollocks.

cheap chicken are reportedly packed with hormones, have less nutrients but more fat.
if i was to choose between the two, i'd choose for organic for this reason alone.
however, i do like Morleys on streatham hill and the Chicken Cottage do nice spicy wings.

Is The Gallery open on a Sunday night? My Dad's just called and offered to buy me dinner. I haven't been to The Gallery yet but, from what I've heard, it's the kind of place he'd like. Don't want to turn up and find it's not open though :(

And if it isn't open, where else would people recommend? Needs to be not too far from a 59/159 bus stop so he can get home easily and doesn't have to walk too far.

I really like Amazonica which is slap bang by a 59/159 bus stop. A liitle way down on the other side of the road from the Police Station on Brixton Road. My mum loved it.

Thanks Mrs M. We'll definitely go there if The Gallery's not open. I don't suppose you know if it is or not do you? The whole 'hidden' nature of the restaurant will really appeal to him.

I've not been to The Gallery for ages I'm afraid and I can't remember what day we went. Amazonica is like a Colombian pueblo though with little tiled roofs over the tables.

Oooh, that does sound good. I don't meat but I do eat fish. Will I be OK?
ETA And do we need to book?

Gyoza on coldharbour lane...

Gyoza is good. The dish which I liked was a mixture of egg-fried rice and seafood.

The toasted paninis in this sandwich bar near Herne Hill station are good

Some of the food in the wazzitcalled Cafe next to the Albert is good.

Sourbread (?) pizza place in Brixton market.

This was last year...:p
