Best of British - in One Hour :-/

why dont you just name some options fictionist! anyone in particular in mind?

That seems reasonable - what about including some more UK Hip Hop? Sovereign is good but what about looking to Blade? He's been involved in the scene for years, has remained steadfastly independent, and is very supportive of other developing artists. If there isn't a time frame limit (and judging by the inclusion of 'The Specials' there isn't - why not use 'The Coming Is Now' - the dub is incredible (and quite frenetic) if you don't like the vocal. Or Roots Manuva -surely a better MC and vocalist than Sovereign?

I imagine it also depends on the type of vibe that you want to achieve.

(And Butchers - Blade isn't black)

I already mentioned roots manuva.

can people dance to it?

or more importantly will people dance to it ?

i suspect youre biased on the hip hop front

It does fit within the framework of records you can dance to, it isn't one of those 'sit around and just nod your head' type of tunes (although they have their time and place).

how about....

leftfield - open up
followed up by

one night in hackney - chris liberator (and friends ?)

can't get much more English than that, and as a final tune would totally flumux the next dj:D

anarcho punk antifa type crowd would lap it up too IME:cool:

I merely noted that fact that there were very few (if any) black artists in your list.

Now you are deliberately lying as I've already pointed out the black artist involvement in my original choices that I made off the top of my head just thinking about tunes I'm thinking of playing and as it happens the proportion is in line with the ethnic demographic of the UK.

You tried flying a Baa Baa Green Sheep with me cos you thought it would be an easy one but I'm afraid it crashed into the ground like a fucking lead balloon.

But thanks for the suggestion of other titles, I'll have a look.

That is quite an accusation to make, and one that can not be supported with reference to this thread. You posted (#18) that you were not out to choose music "just because some of the performers are from a certain background", and cited the Specials as evidence of your inclusivity. You also hinted that I was suggesting there was a racist undertone to your choices.

I did no such thing -as I made clear in post #28 - your choices were not in any way (interpreted by me as being) indicative of a racist agenda. I made an observation - no more and no less.

And now you use the phrase "the proportion is in line with the ethnic demographic of the UK".

How very odd, and how very misguided of you.

It's true. According to the Office of National Statistics, the 2001 census recorded that 7.9% of the UK population were of non-white ethnic origin.

Now, if Isambard's set is to last 1 hour, by my calculations that means that he should include just short of 4 minutes 45 seconds of music by artists of non-white ethnic origin. Probably best to go for the full 4 minutes 45 seconds, I reckon.

Having drilled down further into the data, I would recommend that this 4 minutes 45 seconds be broken down further as follows: -

36 seconds of reggae
64 seconds of bhangra
Just under 29 seconds of the Bhundu Boys, or possibly Ali Farka Toure
14½ seconds of the soundtrack from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The "other" categories present a bit of a challenge, but I'd suggest a quick blast of Ebony & Ivory, just to be on safe side.

Tin Soldiers isn't dancy enough (but it's going on another compilation) so it's Suspect Device for the benefit of the Little Red Riding Hood anarcho lad :o . That sort of cut out Timebomb from Chumbawamba and Cigarette for an Anarchist (which I found between the flatemate's Destinys Child CDs  ) isn't dancy enough either. :p

So is the playlist, an hour and 20 seconds roughly:

Walls Come Tumbling Down - Style Council
Ghost Town - The Specials
Hit me with your rhythm stick - Ian Dury
Panic - The Smiths
Tubthumping - Chumbawamba
Boys who like girls - Blur
Common People - William Shatner version!
Adidas hoodie - Lady Soverign
Has it come to this - The Streets
A trip to Trumpton - Urban Hype
Maggies Last Party - VIM
It's grim up north - KLF
One night in Hackney - Dynamo City
Suspect Device - SLF
Shout to the Top - Style Council
