Best MP3 player / iPod type thang for PC user/uploading CDs to?

Who would you trust on technical matters: Crispy or Dub?
:hmm:

But surely the point is, it shouldn't BE a technical matter. If I'm a bit of a tech-moron, surely my opinion is more reliable than someone who's very au fait with such things?

So fuck you :p :D

woah!! i had no idea about that!! i really haven't a bloody clue, have i? i thought itunes was like an online library of songs which you had to pay to download individially or by the album.

ok, that makes iPods sound a lot more appealing. sorry, please excuse me, i really am as dense as lead and your average labrador that shares a home with teenagers has probably picked up a greater understanding of computer stuff than me.

jesus, next they'll be sending men to the moon

Home? :D:p

Also, i have been told by folk that one of the real hassles about iPods is that they are a real hassle to use if you have a PC as they are designed for Macs. or is this complete fanny-batter?

what exactly does uploading (or downloading - or whatever it is you're doing) stuff from iTunes to the MP3 player/Ipod INVOLVE?

and more to the point is it EASY? i really am pretty crap with all this newfangled computer malarkey.

i've never downloaded any music before apart from digitised copies of obscure old cassette releases by acts i like. and apart from vinyl 12"s that aren't available on CD or to download from anywhere anyway, i pretty much have everything i'd want to put on my player on CD so would rather avoid any additional faffing about. :)

As Crispy said, complete fanny-batter.

It is really easy. Come round and I'll show you if you like?

It's not just iTunes - i actually prefer the creative interface. I love having a radio, and I prefer value over 'iconic status'. Sucker :p

I understand that you've organised your whopping library in a specific way, but the vast majority don't - itunes handles things fine and dandy for them

and also does ipods 'store' things you load into it according to the album ? ie you go to your menu, click on that LP and it will play it undisturbed for the duration? i don't want something that 'shuffles' songs and play them in some random order so some Whitehouse track will suddenly come whilst im listening to Mahler's 5th, sitting looking out the window on the London-Edinburgh train.

Jefe has a massive library of downloaded songs that he's very anal about keeping in the right folder. He's a weird music obsessive :p He chose a slightly more techy route that gives him the picky-picky control he likes.

My mum just wanted to put her CDs on a portable doodad so she can listen to them on the bus. She chose the 'made-for-idiots' route that's very hard to fuck up and does all the heavy lifting for you.

I'm a bit disappointed that no-ones called anyone a cunt on this thread yet.

After all, it's a highly emotive issue.

to be fair im shocked ipod's dont have a radio built in.

Don't ever listen to the radio so it doesnt bother me but it does seema bit weird.

how is drag and drop techhy? this makes no sense.

Your choice. You can listen to an album. Or listen to everything by an artist. Or everything in a genre. Shuffled or unshuffled.

My mum's My Documents folder is a an enourmous flat folder with "Copy (10) of New Document.doc" all over it. She wouldn't know what a neat and tidy filing scheme was if it slapped her.

All that manual management work is taken out of your hands by itunes, which is what makes it easier to use.

Imagine an Excel spreadsheet with track number, name, artist, genre and the like as columns. When itunes grabs the cd track names it fills in all this info.

You then either create playlists of individual tracks, or just go by album, artists or whatever. it'll keep the running order intact, unless you choose the random play option that is.

Indeed, my only gripe with iTunes is the way it stores stuff in the source folder - you can end up with zillions of artist tracks, which can make copying a library for a mate fiddly, altho that's probably me and my problem...

So your mum couldn't work out how to rip a CD (which remember, collects all the same information iTunes does) into a My Music folder, where it's stored by album?

ANd then drag that to the My Music folder on an MP3 player?

Sorry, don't buy it.

eta: none of which has ANYTHING to do with my 'anal' filing system. It's simply a My Music folder.

You've never experienced people who can't use Windows have you Jefe? Take it from someone who's had to train people from how to use a mouse upwards, there are plenty of people who would look blankly at you if you said 'double click' or 'drag and drop'...

Why go to the problem of locating and dragging the right folder if you don't need to though? Let itunes do the whole autosync shaboodle for you.

By which you're implying that iTunes can be used without any clue whatsoever, including how to use a mouse. Which isn't true, is it?

Make a playlist. Burn a Data DVD of it fro mwithin iTunes.

how is locating a My Music folder a problem? :D

Sorry, but you lot are finding difficulties where there simply aren't any. Ripping a CD to a folder and copying to an mp3 player is at LEAST as easy as using iTunes

No, not really. Rip? What's that? What do I use? What's bitrate mean? Which folder?

Well I'm not implying that, it requires less skill and knowledge to use iTunes than it does to manually manage a music collection by dragging and dropping.

Oh fuck off, the process is the same as in iTunes

insert a CD, the software you have which plays CDs will automatically rip it for you, including the tags, to a Music Folder.

same as iTunes does.

Absolutely. A friend of mine is on an IT college course at the moment and she was struggling with the concept of 'copy' 'move' and 'paste'. I explained to her that copying was similar to taking a tracing of a file, but that moving was like cutting it out completely - then pasting is where you put the file afterwards. She was like 'ah, got it now, cheers, I was too nervous of asking the tutor'. It's not that uncommon at all.

I simply don't accept that. If someone has a PC (or Mac) they have enough skills to drag and drop. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to use the PC at all

It takes longer though. Why manual sync when you don't need to, which I'm assuming Chico won't

Besides it's nonsense to claim that the Windows folder system is more intuitive and easy than a dedicated bit of software with help menus. I'm with Crispy - my dad can use itunes, but he can barely locate a source folder without an anguished phone call.

i've never had problems with any of the Creatives I've had - reliable, easy to use, excellent sound quality.
My Zen has crap battery life and it needs bespoke software which isn't even available for Win2K - no simple drag and drop in the flash drive sense.

I'm finding myself using my old reliable 1GByte Zen Nano (which is supposed to be my backup player).
