it's just over complicated for sake of over complication.

Well I guess they took it as far as they could take it, hence the black album was the logical next step, in terms of its dynamics.

AJFA or Ride the Lightning.

Seconded, and it's a real close one i think.

Ride the lightning was the first album i ever bought, like ever! I was 11.

There are some brilliant songs on "Justice....", but it's always been slated for the production, which is a bit shoddy.

I fucking LOVED metalica. I managed to find the original "garage days", for a tenner! I nearly threw up i was so shocked:eek:

I notice a distinct lack of female voters/contributions on this thread eh.

Are Metallica a "boys band"

...And Justice, was the album I got into when I was young - Ive never listened to their earlier stuff, its something that I need get round to, but every album from the Black album as looked pretty poor IMO.

jools holland: (looking obviously reluctant and unimpressed)

you know, theres a lot of people who say your stuff, it all sounds the same - its just raaaar raaaar der der der deer der der der deer'

Lars:

thats one of our riffs!

Load is a pile of shite. In fact, everything after AJFA is.

What?! I think load is massively underrated, its great album! I think its also hetfields most personal. It was a mature development of their sound, though things have regressed with the truly truly awful st. anger.

Not in my home country they're not! :D

Having said that I don't really listen to Metallica so much these days but Master of Puppets still stands as one of my top metal albums ever.

Never been that big on Metallica, but a few of my close friends are well into them so i get exposed to them a lot. Master of Puppets is easily their best.

I hated it when it came out but it's really grown on me over the past ten years, it's not amazing but it is pretty good. St Anger is an amazingly bad piece of shit album.

Not holding my breath but the two new tunes sound alright and a mate who saw them last year says they're great again so maybe, just maybe we'll have another good 'tallica release before they call it a day (can't see them having more than a couple more albums in them tbh)...

I don't know the first album and only a handful of tracks off "Ride the Lightning." For me the black album's the best one I know, closely followed by "Load" and "And Justice For All."

The first two lines of "To Live Is To Die" ;

When a man lies he murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives

still send a shiver down my spine.

Harvester of Sorrow's great as well.

Garage Days is uneven but has some good tracks IMO, like "Breadfan" and "The Wait."

Load has a depth and feeling missing from the first (excellent) albums. It took things to a new level in terms of sound, tone and controlled aggression. Re-load sucked major, and St Whatever is best forgotten, IMO.

Depth of feeling missing from the earlier albums? A song about suicide not feely enough for you!:p

Reload wasn't great but has one my favourite tunes of theirs, Fixxxer. Some of the best riffs, drumming and lyrics they've ever produced.

I like "Attitude" off that album.

It's not what the song is about, it's how the feeling or sentiment is expressed. Metallica successfully repackaged their greatest influences and made them their own. They grew-up with Load, IMO.

Anyway - Testament are the band Metallica have always wanted to be. :p

Don't agree, Load was too restrained to come close to matching the expression of Ride...

I take your point about being restrained; but it's a muscular and intense album...far more so than some of the other thrashers doing more of the same again and again at that time, but just faster or noisier. I'm sat looking at the Metallica shelf (in the flat) and I'll stand by Load for #1.

Well the Kiwi Mrs Swarfega refuses to get very excited by them...

I guess if you are a bogun chick.....

;)

1. Pastor of Muppets
2. And Justice for All
3. Metallica (The Black Album)

And Justice for All would possibly be my number 1 if the production weren't so lacking in bass!

Imagine how good it would sound if they remixed and remastered it!!!

Apparently they took all the bass out to haze Jason Newsted. I've also heard that he didn't turn up to any of the mixing sessions and so they just paid no attention to the bass. But considering that Lars' kick drum on that album sounds like little more than a click, it seems that neither of those two explanations would suffice...

exactly! the producuction is shit on ....and justice for all.

Wouldn't be shocked if it got remastere dbefore too log. They released master again a year(or so) ago.
