Best MC of all time!(nominations)

Bear in mind I was young too - a mere 11 year old at the court of UK Fresh.

Rakim was the man that older brothers and mentors talked about in hushed, awestruck tones, trying to match the skills. Gawd, just a smattering of months earlier, novelty and story telling rap was still prominent, Mike Allen was still the king and the Fresh Prince didn't even seem that annoying or big eared....

You say that, but I downloaded the best of Will Smith recently cos, credit to him, Summertime is a classic and some of his other songs remind me of living somewhere fun when he was big in the charts. Anyway, I listened to some of his early stuff on there - Parents just don't understand etc. - and it is fucking SHIT. Really, really annoyingly shit. Sub Kriss Kross, even. He made Kid n Play look like Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath. But rappers.

Nah, than Ghostface

Aah. In which case, for quantity of quality, mad pop-culture references popping up outta nowhere, being prepared to try new things, and still being on some "now you see him, now you don't" shit...

Yeah, Starks is in my top 3, I'd say. :)

That's the point though - Rakim and Fresh Prince were pretty much contemporaries. Off the top of my head "Girls are nothing but trouble' and 'Paid in Full' were both released around '86/87.

If anything the Fresh Prince was far more typical of the novelty/good tempered rap of the day. Kool Moe Dee was still wittering on about going to see the doctor, numerous cartoon and tv soundtrack samples proliferated and Dr Dre and Yella were wearing jerry curls and bad 80s jumpsuits, cheesing it up on tunes like 'Mission Possible' as WCWC

Rakim was something of a departure from the norm, let's just say...

Not really into the old hippidy hop but I think Big L deserves a nomination.

Aiyyo, you betta flee hobbes, or get your head flown three blocks
L keep rappers hearts pumpin like reeboks

And every year I gain clout and my name sprouts
Some brothersd still be large if the crack never came out
I got the wild style, always been a foul child
My guns go poom-poom, and yo guns go pow-pow

Im known to have a hottie open, I keep the shottie smokin
Front and get half the bones in your body broken
And when it comes to gettin nookie Im not a rookie
I got girls that make that chick toni braxton look like whoopie
I run with sturdy clicks Im never hittin dirty chicks
Got thirty-five bodies, buddy dont make it thirty-six
Step to this youre good as gone, word is bond
I leave mics torn when I put it on

I particularly like the bits in bold :D

If we're having some random selections, then can i have MC Solaar cos of his gallic cool, Tupac for his Digital Underground days as much as anything he did solo, Queen Latifah cos she was the queen, and Del tha Funkee Homosapien for Mistadobalina and the way that he's managed to broaden his work out.

Del's a great MC, but he's samey and I get bored of him really quickly.

Definitely true. I love some of the tracks from Deltron 3030 but the rest of his solo stuff leaves me a bit cold and, even with 3030, I can't listen to the entire album in one sitting.

To be honest, when he isn't doing some extra terrestrial themed rapping or other fantasy stuff, I don't find him all that great.

I saw Atmosphere a couple of weeks back, and I'm not sure Slug's performance wasn't the best I've ever seen.

I was considering going to their show but Slug gets on my tits after four songs or so with all his self-pity. If I was that Lucy Ford girl I'd have sued the cunt, if she even exists.

Another (predictable) vote for Rakim overall but mainly on the strength of his 80s output, he's fallen off a bit since then (e.g Stay A While, Better Than I've Ever Been).

Craig G, Biggie and Big Daddy Kane are tied for second, Black Thought, Big L and Percee P tied for third.

Interesting no one has (quite rightly) mentioned Jay-Z. He was voted first when MTV ran the poll.

And whoever said Guru...the most overrated MC ever. If it wasn't for Primo, he'd be broke.

KRS1
Rakim
Gool G Rap
Lord Finesse
Kool Keith from Ultramagnetic
LL
Big L
Mad skills. (Amazing ghost writer. Writen for loads of ppl)
Big Daddy Kane

All of those chaps deserve a life time achievement award if they have not got one already. Loads of missed out but these are the first that come to mind.

Jay Z was the hype man for Kane I think
Biggie Smalls >> Tupac
fat Joe does it for my somehow.

Nobody with half a knowledge of the genre would say Jay-Z is the best ever but he'd be up there for me just because of the quality of his rhymes and the fact he's a natural MC. I've seen him get stick for being too showy, which is bullshit I reckon because hip hop has always had colourful, charismatic MCs.

He shits on Slug imo, who does pretty much the same song again and again. Alright, ffs, I get it, you've got low self-esteem...seems a bit of an odd way to exhibit that but there you go. Emo-hop.

Although, credit to him for the Christina Ricci shout outs :D
