Best 'master and apprentice' film?

Nightcrawler (assuming the master is allowed to be an absolute twat).

Glad no-one has mentioned star wars :P

Don't you mean Empire Strikes Back.

Think there's shades of it in all the star wars films I've seen. Must have been on the day's agenda when George Lucas attended his scriptwriting lesson.

Too obvious?

^ I think father and son is a different relationship from master and apprentice. Sons are frequently expected to take over the "family business".

Both an enjoyable action romp, and yet also incredibly offensive. Such is the duality of nostalgia

I know one should be offended that a white guy plays an obnoxious Asian master. But it's that performance and that performance alone that makes the dreadful thing watchable.

Reminds me of the TV series Kung Fu now that you mention it. Another white guy playing an Asian but this time in the apprentice role. Stolen from Bruce Lee.

Finally mentioning a really obscure master prentice relationship written by Bruce Lee. The Magic Flute.

Ooh one more Bruce Lee link...

No retreat, no surrender.

Angry teen trained by the invisible ghost of master Bruce Lee.
