Best managers?

No disrespect to Martin O'Neill, (I'm a big fan, unsurprisingly), but I can't see why his name is in this thread. I don't think he's "faltered" at Villa - he's barely been there a year, nor has he thrown money away (apart from signing that fucking carthorse Harewood). Two league cups and winning the SPL don't make you a great manager.

For my money, Ferguson (obviously) and Wenger, based on longevity, honours and style of football. However, I don't buy this "beautiful football on no money" idea. How much did Arsenal pay for Franny Jeffers, for example? Or Wiltord? Everyone's bought some expensive duffers...

Bill Shankly, the man everyone copied.
Bill Paisley

Clough, Lord Ferg, Wenger...

But, what criteria are you setting for greatness. Innovation, style, wins, achieving lots with a limited budget, gaining multiple promotions, English wins, continental wins,....Contribution to the game,....hmmmm

Re: Wenger, no-one's said he's spent no money, just less than his counterparts at other major clubs.

Re: O'Neill, achievements at clubs prior to Celtic are why he's considered great. What he did at Leicester was nothing short of amazing.

This table summed it up quite well:

Yeah but if you factor in the wages (iirc Arsenal's are behind Chelsea but ahead of Man U) the argument doesn't really stand up IMO.

Not that I don't think he's done a great job anyway.

Fabio Capello - won league title with every team he's coached - Milan, Madrid, Juve and Roma. His early 90s Milan team IMO is still the best team Europe's seen and went 58 games unbeaten
Capello is a very good manager, granted, and that Milan team was great, but it should be acknowledged that the framework for it was created for him by Arrigo Sacchi who preceded him, especially that nye-unbeatable back four of Tasotto-Costacurta-Baresi-Maldini.

One more to throw into the mix is Mario Zagallo, who played in Brazil's 1958 and 1962 World Cup wins and managed their 1970 victorious team, thought by many to be the greatest team ever. Now it could be claimed that a manager with Carlos Alberto, Rivelinho, Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao, and of course Pele was on easy street, but it must take a shrewed man to combine so much talent effectively.

Oh yeah, has Jock Stein been mentioned yet?
